I was wondering if anyone knew a thing or two about CB radios. I have a setup in my car already, but I'm gonna put together a base station within the next couple of months. I was wondering if there is anything I'll need besides the CB and an antenna, and obviously some coax. Is that basically it, or will I need something better to power the CB/antenna? I'm unfamiliar with base stations.

I'm probably gonna get a Uniden PC68 with a Solarcon IMAX2000. But is there anything else I would need for the setup to be effective? I already have the SWR meter to tune it and shit.

You guys need to get off your asses and get one of these. They're gonna be the most handy communication device on the planet when the shit hits the fan.

Snap to it!

One of the best places to find good, cheap, CB equipment is at "swap fests", generally put on by the local HAM radio club. Sure, the HAM's will look down on you for your pansy radio, but you can pick them up cheap, with all the hardware. Also, many of the guys there will be more then happy to help instruct you on using a SWR meter to tune it.

I was able to get two nice CB's, with 3 whip antennas for around $25, and a few handheld units for $10.

Craigslist is also another good place to find this equipment. But stay away from Wal Mart! They have a magnetic CB antenna there, and its completely terrible.

If you hate your wallet, RadioShack tends to have decent stuff too.

While you're buying CB equipment, grab a handheld police scanner too.

Yeah scanners are always fun. They're illegal in CA though, which is unfortunate because of the amount of traffic we get on those suckers.

But yeah, the only things really worth buying at Radioshack are the antennas. Of course, most of them are magnetic junkers, but they have 4' firestiks and 8' steel whips for $20, both of which I have. And they work just dandy. Fry's has a few good accessories, surprisingly. I found a really cheap stainless steel spring there, and a legit trunk-lip mount for my antenna. It's all about what you're looking for.

But private owners are just about always the best places to look for these things. Craigslist, swap meets, and garage sales. Good stuff.

That does suck, scanners are so much fun, and they're especially useful if a blizzard or other event hits.

And yeah, some of the Radio shack stuff is overpriced garbage, but in general, most whip antennas are nice. Another place to find CB equipment is at those large truck stops, one of them around here carries a full supply of Wilson Antennas, which no one else locally has. Albeit, at high prices.

Overall, I'd agree, private owners are the best bet.

Actually, for a PAW scenario, CB is good for local, but HAM stuff would be ideal for long range....Time to take those classes.

You put a big enough Kicker or "hunters amp" on a CB and they work fine.

I have always wondered if it was not better to invest in a better comm system, like Single Side Band (SSB), instead of CB.  SSB should be more private and secure.  In a real disaster or SHTF scenario, do you really want the bad guys listening in to your conversations?

Anybody who knows comm gear well care to comment on security and costs??

Maybe simple digital encryption of the signal is all you need??

Yeah SSB/Ham would work out better for a base station, no question about it. But a 10-meter CB system would be better, IMO, in a vehicle and for mobility purposes. Ham radios are fuckin huge and aren't really portable.

The problem with a ham setup is the cost. Ultimately I'm still postponing my CB setup at my house. I always have my CB on in my car, though. What I may end up doing is picking up the IMAX and installing it, then bringing the CB out of my car to use in the house. Keep shit simple.
