U know after finishing Keene's 3 zed books and also reading the monster trilogy, i have to say i don't like zombie animals. I believe they are a lazy plot device when the author can think of a way for the zed virus to disseminate among all peoples.

Especially in Keene's books where it really makes it impossible to believe that the humans have any chance at all.

I also believe it destroys one of the mostly important elements of a zed story The Siege as i Call it were the most character development takes place(i.e) Dotd 78).

It Also takes away from the terror that the human zeds invoke when ur running from zombie bears, zombie sharks, Zombie WHALES(in dead sea), and huge swarms of zed Birds.

I have to agree, I believe zombie-type animals are really for another type of story altogether.

I particularly hate the concept of zombie birds.  As if birds weren't bad enough.

Yeah from what Ive seen a good zombie story tends to have phases those being:
Outbreak (there can be a little bit before the w/e causes the zeds, but not too much.)
On The Run
Refuge
Siege
Breach/Escape
Salvation/Destruction

Zed birds and rats make refuge impossible since there is no way to escape both.

I agree, it does seem like a lazy plot device.

The characters should have enough to worry about with classical "Night of the Living Dead" zombies.  Adding in zombie animals, thinking zombies, or sprinting zombies just seems like a cheap way of making a crappy story more exciting.  (I'm not knocking MSS, Z's idea of the way the virus progresses is interesting and unique.)

I think we have  consensus here. Animal zombies are a no-no.

I'll second that or 3rd that whatever .....although the zombie dogs in Res Evil were kind of cool but in general zombie animals are not my cup of tea.
If you want dangerous animals in a PAW story try packs of dogs that have gone feral that is an actual problem in many parts of the world. I would imagine thousands of homeless pets would be a big problem and an interesting plot device.

I quit reading dead sea It read like a serial comic strip with no fluidity to the story, the characters were poor and now I know I will never pick it up again.

to me zombie animals can't happen anyways. I can see maybe something big like a whale or dogs but birds and bugs. I does to me make it a little better in the story but if has been  60+ days in the story , i don't want to see zombie animals.

So basically we're an organization that serves to protect and preserve peace! I guess it's not exactly a typical school. Oh well, that isn't important! For now, lets roll up our sleeves and get to work!

The big difference in Resident Evil, vs. pretty much everything else... Is that it wasn't a disease, it was a mutagen that affected basically anything with organic material.  The fact that humans turned into zombies was just a weird side effect.  If injected directly with the mutagen, humans would turn into some weird monster just like anything else.  At its heart, Resident Evil is actually a story about man-made monsters, not zombies.

Told that way, with that in mind, Resident Evil is basically the only story series that gets a pass.  I'm talking the games though, not the movies.  The movies completely miss the point and jump right into cashing in on the zombie craze.
