I was driving down the highway around midnight tonight, on my way home. My man was in the car beside me. To the right of the road, a few miles back behind the foot-hills, is a very tall, very bright power plant. As we passed by it, i noticed the bright white light blinking on top of one of the towers (not a common occurrence apparently) We didn't think much of it of course, until we started seeing signs stating: "Do Not pick up hitchhikers, Call 911 immediately to report one." That, coupled with the dozen or so police cars blocking exits and swarming the roads made me a little uneasy. I laughed at myself, saying in jest "Oh shit, they just lost control of the virus." Then of course, i started thinking.

What if that were the case. By now I'm sure most of us have seen the article on cracked about how the world couldn't possibly fall to hoards of zombies. Their main argument being that almost everyone as seen the movies and knows what zombies are and how to kill them. That is entirely true, but there in lies my question. Sure, theoretically we know what they are, but in the midst of an actual outbreak, how many of us would actually think to start popping zed heads. And by "us" i am referring to the general populace. In the case of those on this forum, most of us would pick up on what was going on as soon as the shit started to hit the fan. But i mean, how many of the quote-un-quote "normal" people would think to bash her skull in if 7 year old bite victim Kelly bum rushed them in pediatrics? How long would it take before the news let go of political correctness, and admitted we had to shoot to kill, or even admitted what was going on in the first place? How many would really get it? And by the time that happens, would it be too late to fix it?

Depends on if you have a patient zero that spreads it and how long and in what form the the infection takes hold.
28 days type we are pretty much screwed.

Just bitten and takes hours to turn may have a good chance.

But then you have the all recently dead bitten or not rise is anybodies guess.

Good question. There is hopefully too big of a jump from every movie we see to our day to day reality. It's one thing to watch a lot of vampire movies and quite another to pound a wooden steak through your neighbor's heart because you haven't seen him in daylight for a week. We may read about zombies and viral outbreaks and watch the movies but I don't think most people think in those terms seriously. I think we would fall apart. Little Kelly in the pediatric ward would bite a few people.

The fraction of the population that has the brains, guts, and wherewithal to stand their ground in a zombie apocalypse would unfortunately be dwarfed by the idiots that would get most of us killed...

The thing that I think would be the biggest dilemma is that people wouldn't know how serious it was until it's too late. If some blubbering idiot is walking towards you, whose first instinct is going to be to shoot him in the face? No one is going to be killing the infected until shit is FUBAR. I don't know about you, but if there is any remote chance that the country isn't about to fall from some viral outbreak, I'm not gonna pull the trigger on my neighbor or go beating people's heads in. What if I were to kill 20 infected, only for the nation to regain order and find a simple cure to what ended up being a simple outbreak? Do I get jail time for mass homicide? No one wants to be the one to start killing people and spouting THE END IS HERE when the end actually isn't here. Then you really fucked yourself.

This all and how many people really live like a hermit 24/7? If there is some super bug outbreak and it has a two week incubation period how far is it going to spread before it's even on the radar? How many people here can say they haven't been ANYPLACE public in the last two weeks or more? Did you touch a doorknob while you were out? Most everyone else there did. It may just be dumb luck on who would make it and who wouldn't.

We're fucked.  People will be hesitant to kill the newly infected since we're conditioned to worry about lawsuits and such....it won't be until the main stream media is reporting on the "dead rising again" before the general sheeple public "starts" to think for themselves.

That and half the people under 40 would be too busy trying to get a youtube video out of the moment and be filming with their cellphones.

The nice thing, they're the ones gonna be overrun and eaten by the zombies....
