So I'm looking to up my verity of safe foods. I got canned food, dehydrated foods, water, and MRE's.
So I'm wondering what you all have and how much you have.

Don't forget the GREEN vegies! Also if you plan on using MRES they do go "bad" also drink a shitton of water or buy some ennama's to go with em long term use will plug you up.

Canned goods are a much better choice. (don't forget the CAN OPENER!) They have some water in them as well.  Do what we do just buy one extra can while in the store as part of your regular shopping and put it in a seprate area, away from the normal storage. From time to time use the "stored cans" and replace as used.

Having food to eat is just as important as 1000's of rounds of ammo. If you have been stockpiling ammo and have no food/water your screwed!

Also a "Real" gasmask is a good investment-(not one of those POS mil surplus ones w/ the 50 year old filter) no, not for poison gas dropped by the USG, for the damm fires where chemicals/stuff is burning, why do ya think the FD uses tanked air! Yes, in part for smoke but it's really for all the crap in a house when fire is added becomes a killer.

Just for fun, pretend you can't go outside for anything. How long would you be able to stay indoors before starving?

Also try to stay away from anything that has to be cooked, no power,no gas = no food. Ever eat dry uncooked ramen noodles.....try it some time.

Well....I live in the land of food storage...
2 year supply....
for 2 people...and I will eat the other if it comes to that...with barbeque sauce...maybe just to get rid of him

plus I have food storage for dogs..

plus beer....

I bottle lots of fruits and veggies... plus dry them..so yummy.  I have bottled (with a pressure cooker) meat before..  deer and fish are much better bottled in my opinon.  So I have lots of variety.

Learning to can/bottle your own food is easy and a good way to get food storage built up.
Jams and fruits are super simple...
the initial investment of bottles is all it take..oh and a water bath canner pan and a pressure cooker.
I take bottles from anyone giving them away...

4 cases of MRE's not my favorite but they last a long time.... about 100lbs of rice, 50 lbs of dried beans both on sealed buckets. it varies but I also have about 100 mixed cans of wetpack foods. A case of canned cheese and a case of canned butter. That's my storage and I have a pretty full pantry I figure on light rations I can feed 4 for give or take 6 months especially if I can suppliment with fish and game.........

-15 cans of assorted food in seperate closet,

-along with a portable water purifyer, and I also have 2 cases of Ramen, I'm too lazy to check how many packs per case.

-I have about 2 dozen assorted MREs, and some other bags of freeze dried fruit and vegetables which I constantly rotate out, because that shit is good.

- 3 gallons of distilled water, and a box of individual serving powerade powder (for electrolytes)

And most importantly 4 POUNDS OF JERKEY! Both beef and venison. (It was on sale...and its JERKEY!

Also, I'll plan on using my rifle to help me get food. (My neighbors kid is severely obese, he won't be able to outrun me)

i will eat people too...i mean...this is soooo funny, but i had a dream of a monty python skit...and in it was myself and the rest of the cast..and i had a limey accent. So anyhow, heres the set-up...a search and rescue team finds me on a mountain top...and I am the sole survivor...like the Donner party. They ask me how I survived and i told them i had to eat the other survivors to get by....so i know this doesnt sound funny..BUT it was really clever when i dreamt it...especially me doing the cockney accent..anyhow, they ask how i ate them..and i go on describiong it

" it was tough, but i braised the old man in the old ladies fat and enjoyed him with afternoon tea....but i was so severely malnourished i finished him off with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and apple sauce"

i went on describing how i ate the people with all sorts of other foods, like carrots and beer etc...i was feasting hahaha...anyhow, the skit was funny..and...no more smoking for me before bed now

That's specifically why I'm buying UHE's pellet gun, actually. Z enlightened me on the concept of using a pellet gun for small game, as you save ammo and it's quieter.

I started a long term food storage program last year. I have loads of freeze dried food (sliced fruit, vegetables, stews, lasagna, speghetti, etc) all commercially prepared, stuff from Mountain House and Provident Pantry. I have about 6 months of that stuff for my family of 4. I also have a six gallon bucket of rice, another of pinto beans, a third of dried corn meal. The buckets are food grade with mylar bags and O2 absorbers inside. Then there is 5 gallons of honey, 5 pounds of salt, a bunch of other spices and some canned goods. Everything but the canned goods claim to have a shelf life of 20 plus years. If the world doesn't go to blazes by then, I'll eat the stuff.

That's awesome dude. I just wish I didn't live in a place that was so crowded, because the odds of me staying put during a PAW are pretty low due to the high population.

But really Thasic, that's an awesome program you have going on.

Yep, very good point, often overlooked as well. I hunted game for years with a pellet gun. I have 3 of the 10-pump style. (same model, parts interchange) that shoot bb's or .177 pellets. Also, it maybe legal to build a silencer for it as well. Have to look into that.

Yeah I almost bought a used Gamo Whisper earlier this year, which had a built-in silencer on it.

Yeah Z-Hunter, thanks. I'm not a survialist nut job or anything. I don't expect the world to end or zombies to crop up or anything like that, but after 9-11 and the 2003 black out in New York, I got antsy.

After a bit of internet surfing I found it would not be very hard to knock out a major portion of the US power grid. A simple accident or a few well placed bombs and the country goes dark, maybe for weeks. Also, a relatively simple computer virus could easily shut down all banking, internet and cell phones for days or even months. What if a major earthquake hit or a big hurricane, the effect may be shorter in duration but not too different. Heck, a good snowstorm shuts down my area for days (I live in Washington DC area).

Think about the loss of banking for just a few days. How much money do most people keep on hand? I pay all of my bills online. I use a check card instead of cash 90% of the time. If I need cash I go to an ATM. My paycheck is deposited with Direct Deposit via the internet. No electricity or internet, no money. No money, no food. How fast would society break down if people start to get hungry? Grocery stores in the US, by far the most well stocked food stores on Earth, have at best three days of stock. That would be gone in hours if a real emergency hit, with no new stock coming since the store could not even order more food let alone pay for it (no banks or internet). If a terrorist really wanted to screw things up, it would not be too difficult.

The average family in the US has less than a weeks food at home, usually only a few days worth. Most of that is refrigerated, spoiled quickly without electricity. Things could get very bad very quick.

Besides my food storage I have $1000.00 cash in small bills at home. I also have an M1 carbine with 300 rounds of ammo, a 22c Henry Repeater with near 1000 rounds and two handguns with a couple hundred rounds each.

I'm not woried about zombies or alien invaders. I'm worried about the hungry and pissed off people that may live in my neighborhood. That will be the PAW we all need to worry about.

Damn Thasic.  That made me depressed for a minute.  lol  All good points though.  I usually have about 5-6 cases (32 packs) of bottles water and I would guess about 4-5 days worth of food at the house at any given moment.  I will be one of those assholes at the grocery store buying all the canned beef stew in the place if some shit went down.

Honestly though in all those past events (black out 2003/9-11 etc) I always laughed at the people who freaked out and went straight to the store to buy milk and bread and shit, but for one I was younger and didnt have kids.

I have a safe at home with a coupld hundred in it if I needed it and the Remington of course.  I am not as prepared as I should be though.
