I posted a similar thought on my facebook page.

An individual "A-haj" on http://www.nj.com/entertainment/tv/index.ssf/2013/10/the_walking_dead_season_4_recap_swine_of_the_times.html

posted a comment about why didn't Rick consult with Herschel when the pigs got sick.  Herschel is, or was, a vet.  Never even thought about that.

Of course, I think there's some strain of swine flu going on.

And why didn't he just let the pigs run loose instead of "ham" stringing them.  Wouldn't they still have drown them away?  Possibly further into the woods where the crazy cannibal lady could have harvested them?

That's what I said.  My girlfriend said they might be worried the pigs would try to get back in their pins and would just draw more walkers to the fences.

But there was only one pig sick at the time, before the outbreak.  Maybe Rick just didn't think anything of it.  I know I didn't.  But I don't know pigs.  If they were all sick I'm sure he would have asked Herschel.
