Hell yeah. Luckily it's moving, so it'd be less like ringing a dinner bell and more like the ice cream truck trundling by while the kids run after it waving money in the air. But once you do stop, you'd have to put some distance between you and it in short order.

A refinished freight train would be piles of awesome.  Has anyone else thought of how awesome it'd be to "nudge" a crowd of zombies with the cow catcher?  Unlike a car or bus, they'd never be able to flip that heavy bastard, and if you stopped in towns with restaurants, you could recycle cooking oil into diesel with minimal processing.  Think of how long you could keep it going if your crew had a diesel mechanic (who would probably be tragically killed.  Better have him train an "apprentice" mechanic.  Preferably, this would be a cute, but hardcore female survivor.  Have I already put too much thought into this?).

Anyway, I think a PAW trainfortress could also be awesome if your group shrank or grew, because you could add or subtract cars.

The biggest problems you'd run into are hostile survivors and degradation of unmaintained tracks.  Hostile survivors could give you that concealed bent rail, or they could just ambush you.  With a train, you can't just stay low and keep quiet and let them think you're not at home. Also, growing up in a city where there is a great deal of freight traffic, I know that it would be weeks or months, not years, before the railways would degrade beyond usability.  Neglect seems to be as much of a problem as abuse to tracks.

rig some mortar tubes to it =O "hahah they cant get us because were hiding behind this hill" *boom* oh yea Z on your land in the middle of nowhere thing you should totaly buy some especially if its a windy place. friend's father had some grazing land for his cattle got paid bookooos cash to have wind mill installed think was 180k and monthly syphon of power. 180k can buy you alot of guns. and on the shot gun thing never thought they were really loud but guess thats just me. shotty would be nice encountered in close quarters with unfriendly living plus get you into doors if you have breaching rounds. brewster made good use of his shotty on the bandits after all and used it to breach that door too.

oh yea another thing i almost forgot about the food. i bought myself a small block of magnesium you scrape with your knife to get flakes off it and then on one side of the block has a flint so u just strike with your knife and you have a whole bunch of fires. completely water proof and very compact so you can cook your food. fire is also a good moral booster. ah yes and something else compact and can be used also. a reel of 15lb fishing line and small box of hooks and maybe some fake bate so you could fish if need be and digging up worms or maybe catching smaller fish like minnos and then attaching them to the hooks for bait. fishing is also very quiet.

Well, there's no way I'll ever have 180k sitting around unless someone in Hollywood gets on the phone and buys the film rights to all three books, but I still think I can swing it with much less. That's cool as hell that he was *paid* by someone *else* to put up windmill power; again, I could only hope to be so lucky. Les Stroud uses a wind/solar combo to power his compound in Canada; I might be tempted to do the same depending on where I get my land.

PS - Not many people know this but "bookoo" = "beaucoup" But nice vocabulary utilization.

If you use wind might as well get solar as well.

I haven't done any pricing on wind, but I figured I could kill two birds with one stone and put up a rig to hold my solar panels, then use the same rig to put a windmill on top of and generate both kinds of electricity. I'll only do this if I'm in an area of the country where a significant number of days per year are overcast and/or windy; take where I currently am. On sunny days it's usually very still, but when we have clouds there's almost always higher winds as well, so the two would complement one another.

That sounds like a good setup. Oh yeah I forgot to ask what are this hideout's defenses.

Thunder and Lightning, which are what I call my left and right hands.

(Also, a rifle and a well-trained German Shepherd.)

I like sounds good although I would love my hideout to be a tower like medieval style.

What's up with this, Z?  Sort of like a manual on what "not" to say to us?

No, it's an example of what not to do in a ZPAW. I had thought the added note in the thread title had made that relatively clear. (I seem to often be wrong in that respect.)

As far as I can tell, nothing in this thread has anything to do with anyone saying anything wrong to anybody. I'm not sure where you guys got that idea.

Would you guys prefer if I simply deleted this thread and then wrote a new one with pretty much the same information? Because I will, if you want.

The ban was for something else entirely. Again, nothing contained herein has anything to do with anyone saying something wrong. (Just not putting any thought into what is said.)

The ban was for things that actually were actionable.

Like making death threats against posters.

I wouldn't ban someone for making a terrible zombie plan. I'd prefer to try and educate them, like we tried to do here. If you read the thread, you'll see that at no point here did anyone get angry.

The guy was a nut, and frankly, deserves more ridicule than we've given him.

I hope that clears up the confusion you're all feeling. If further elucidation is necessary, let me know.
