I cannot believe it has come to this guys.  We have all grown to like each other on this forum.  Day dreaming about what it would be like if the S REALLY did HTF.  Well here it is.  I am grabbing my BOB, my wife and my shotgun and we are heading to the mountains.

Everyone grab a map, your loved ones, a 2 way radio, your weapons and your favorite book and head to Kalispell, Montana.  The population is under 15,000 and there is access to a lake, the mountains and the cold of the Canadian north if it is needed.  My folks have a house there that we used to vacation to all the time on Grouse trail right by Best View Dr. The house has a big red roof you can’t miss it. We have all talked about it before so everyone knows what they should be carrying or what they think is the best.  If you want to bring a lot of ammo then do it.  If you want to bring a lot of food then do it.  When you get in the area everyone try your two way radios on channel 7.  Hopefully we can reach each other that way.

We will hopefully meet up with all of you guys there.  We are going to see how far we can get in the SUV and improvise from there.  I am not sure how bad it is out there, but around here the time has come for us to get out of dodge.  I have not been to work in a week and the neighborhood has turned into a breeding ground for the dummies who were not smart enough to stay indoors.  There are 5-6 beating on my front door as I write this.  My wife has not spoken in 4 days.  Not since I had to shoot her mom because she turned and tried to attack my wife.  Thank God she is at least coherent and is understanding what I am saying and doing.

I am not sure how we are even going to make it out of the house, but I will come up with something.

I hope to see ALL of you at the location.  I am not sure how long it is going to take us to get there, but I have nothing left here.  All of my family is dead except for me and my wife.  I have not heard from any of my friends in 3 days.  I was planning on bringing them with me, but I cannot wait any longer.

I think I just heard a board breaking from the window in the back room.  We will see you all there.  God speed and good luck!

“John!  John!  Come on man open up!”

I ran to the back room and peeked out between the boards fastened to the window.

“I’ll be damned!”

I quickly started trying to pull boards from the door.

“Hold on man!  Damn am I glad you’re not dead!”  I said.

“Yeah me to.” My friend Sean said behind the door.  The last time I spoke with him the phone cut out after a series of shouts.

“Now hurry up or I will be dead!  There are 3 of them closing in on my ass from the alley!  Fuckers have been following me for a few minutes.  What took you so long to answer the door dude?  I was about to take off.  I figured you for dead.”  He said through the door.

“Sorry man.  I was lost in thought.  Now shut the fuck up so I can get to work on these boards.  I think I may have screwed some in!  Fuck!”

I was frantically trying to pry boards from the door to let my friend in.  I looked around to see if I could find something to help the cause, but there was nothing nearby.

“Shit Shit Shit! Dude I cannot find anything to pry these boards off with.  High tail it around to the side and I will meet you over there.  I can get you in on that side.”

I had installed a latch system with a couple 2x4ers on the side door just in case I needed to make a quick exit.  I know I used to think that the days during a ZPAW would be monotonous and slow, but let me say that is not the case.  These last few days have flew right by.  Feels like I just put this latch system up earlier today, but it was really at least 5 days ago.  It was right after I had to shoot my mother in law because she tried biting my wife.  It was my first zombie kill and one I will never forget.

I rushed past my wife who was still motionless on the couch trying to make my way to the side door to let Sean in.  She was not ready for all this.  I wasn’t even really ready for this, but I was definitely more prepared than she could have ever been.

“Honey are you OK?”  I asked as I rushed by her.

“Sean is still alive!  Can you believe it?”  she did not respond, but she did look in my direction.  I caught site of her head turning as I rounded the hall to the kitchen.

Sean was definitely not her favorite friend of mine, but he was one of my best friends and I was glad he was alive.

I heard a thump by the side door as I was running through the kitchen.

“Shit Shit Shit!!  Sean!!!  Are you alright?”

I finally got to the side door and lifted the 2x4ers off to unlock it and heard another thump right on the other side of the door.  There was no window to peek through so I had no idea what was happening on the other side of the door and Sean had not responded.

“SEAN!”  I yelled.

Nothing.  No reply just another bang on the other side of the door.  Frantic now, I ran back to the kitchen to try and peek through the boards on the window to see what was going on.  I saw a couple zombies banging on the door, but no sign of my friend.  I looked back at the door and realized I forgot to put the boards back up.  I ran back and secured the door and tried to figure out what happened.  I ran back to the back door and peeked through and could see the zombies that were after Sean looking up.

“What the hell are they looking up for?”  I asked the empty room.

“And where the hell did Sean go?”

I studied the zombies from the security of the house for a few minutes trying to clear my head.  3 male zombies all roughly my age.  I had never seen these people before and wondered if they lived around here.  They were all wearing blue jeans and t shirts.  The shirts I am assuming were white at one point, but now were stained red with blood.  I think one of them had an Iron Maiden shirt on, but it was hard to tell.  All of them had bite wounds on their shoulders and vacant stares in their eyes.  They were swaying ever so slightly and still looking up.

I heard a thump from above me.

“What the fuck?”

Finally it hit home.  Somehow Sean managed to get on the roof.  He must have run around to the side and seen the zombies there and somehow made it on the roof.  How the fuck he did that I have no idea, but it made sense now.

I ran back to the attic access and pulled the ladder down.  I started screaming for my friend when I got to the attic.  I could hear the footfalls on the roof now clear as day.

“How the fuck am I going to get in there?”  He asked through the roof.

I had no idea and started trying to think of a safe way to get him in.  There were no windows up here and only a couple vents that were not big enough for him to squeeze through.  I scanned the area racking my brain trying to figure a safe way.

“How the fuck did you get on the roof?”  I yelled.

“You had a ladder sitting by the back door.  When I rounded the corner I saw a couple of those things by the side and went back towards the backdoor.  Those fuckers that were following me were to close and I saw the ladder before it was too late.  Lucky those things cannot climb!”  His words were muffled, but I heard what he was saying.  Thank God I left that ladder out back.

“Alright man well you are in no danger right now let me try to think of a way to get you in here.”  I said.

“Well hurry up dude.  The view from up here sucks!  Your neighborhood has more of these fuckers than mine did.  I should have stayed home!”  He joked.

“I will be right back man.”

I went back through the attic access and started trying to think of a way.  It was hot up there and I couldn’t think straight.  I started looking around the bedroom to try and get inspiration.  The master bedroom used to be 2 rooms.  There was a den off the back of the house and a couple years ago I tore the wall down to make a master bedroom.  Man that was a lot of work.  Luckily I had help and Sean was one of the people who helped me through all that.

“Wait a second.”  I told the empty room.  And in response the zombies started pounding on the back door again.

I ran to the basement and grabbed my saw.  I am not sure why it took me so long to think of it, but the roof is just wood and we are not sticking around here long so I will just cut a piece of the roof off so Sean can climb in.  I don’t have to worry about zombies getting in through the hole because like Sean said earlier they cannot climb.  So unless there are people who were skydiving right above my hose that turned into zombies mid flight I have nothing to worry about.

“About time!”  Sean said as he slid through the hole I just made.

“Man is it good to see you!  I thought the worst when I heard all those screams the last time I talked to you!”  I said as I gave him a quick hug.

“Yeah I don’t really want to think about that right now.”  He looked away as he said it.  “Where’s Nadia?”

“She is down stairs.  She has been a little fucked up since I had to brain her mom.”

Surprisingly Sean didn’t make a wise crack.  He usually would.  He just nodded his head with a vacant look in his eyes.

“Well come on down man.  We were just about to get out of dodge when you showed up.  You can help me get things ready to take off after you settle in and grab a bite to eat.”

“Yeah, alright.”

So we spent the rest of the afternoon getting all the supplies together and making an exit strategy.  We sat in the front room with my wife, but she still has not come out of her trance.  We plotted and we planned and we made lists all the while she just kind of stared off in space.

It was hard to concentrate on details because of all the moaning the zombies were doing.  Not only that, but the 5-6 that were pounding at the front door earlier has turned into 8-9 and the incessant pounding wears on your nerves.

“So what the fuck is going on dude?  You were all into zombies and shit.  How did this shit happen?”  He asked with a pissed off tone.

“Dude don’t look at me.  I mean I used to read about them and used to come up with make believe scenarios, but I never thought it would really happen.  Almost everything I ever read on the subject talked about a virus.  It usually never involved aliens or any shit like that, but I am not a doctor dude so don’t look at me.”  I said with a little more edge than I intentioned.

“Sorry man.  I just, just…”  He trailed off and looked away for a second.

“What the fuck are we going to do?  Where are we going to go?”  He said a little more somberly this time.

I got up and went over to him and put a hand on his shoulder while he sat on the couch with his head in his hands.

“I don’t know dude.  I know we can’t stay here.  We need to find a better place to hide out until this is all over.  Eventually 8-9 will turn into 20-30 and then we are trapped in here and fucked for sure.  We need to get out of the city to start.  I have some people that I know that I am going to try and meet up with at my parents place in Montana.”

He looked up.

“What people?”

“Well like you said I was the one all into zombies.  There was a forum that I would post to about zombies.  All of the people there were really into zombies and some of them even had cabins and places to go in case it ever became a reality.  I told them they were welcome and that they could bring whoever they like.  Like I said earlier we were on our way there when you came by.”

“Where is this place again?”  He asked.

“It’s in Montana.  You never went there with us?”

“Not that I recall, but dude that is pretty fucking far.  You want to travel across the country to meet up with these people?  That’s crazy!”

“Do you have any other ideas?  Sure we could head up north, but where?  I trust these people and they are semi prepared for something like this.  Better than anyone else I know.  I wouldn’t be surprised if when we got there they had tanks and all kinds of shit like that.”

“We only need a place to hang for a little bit man.  We do not need tanks and all that crazy shit.”  He said.

“Sean you are not getting it man.  People are coming back from the dead and trying to eat us and every time they bite someone they get infected.  It is only a matter of days before millions of people are infected.  This shit is like a wild fire.  Unless someone finds a cure this shit will not stop until the whole planet is infected.  There is no ‘couple days’.  We are going to have to fight for our lives from this day forward.”

He stood up from the couch and kind of looked dazed for a minute.  I gave him a minute to compose himself and then he finally said “How do you know all this?”

“I am the zombie guy remember?”  I said with a smirk on my face.

He busted out laughing.  It was not long before I joined him.  I am not sure what was so damn funny, but I think we needed to break the tension a little.  I feel like I may have lost my mind for a second there.  We were doubled over with laughter until we heard glass shatter.

Hello guys!  I hope some of you are still around because I have not heard from anyone yet.  Well the last few days have been pretty interesting.  I had a friend who I thought was dead come by the house, but before we could get on the road the house became surrounded.

Remember when we used to speculate on how the zombies would track humans?  Well so far it seems like they are using sight and or sound.

I am not sure if it was the circular saw I used to cut the roof for my friend to get in or the fact that my friend was stuck on the roof for a few minutes, but after about 2 hours of getting everything together to leave we became surrounded.  We barely kept them at bay.  One second we were laughing the next we were fighting to keep them out of a broken window they got through somehow.

We had planned on leaving the day I made my first post, but have been surrounded the past 5 days.  We have tried a few things, but nothing has worked so far.  We cannot get them back far enough to get out to the SUV.

The little I know about them so far:

----------------------------------------------------------

They react to movement.

They react to sound.

I am not sure about smell.

I am not sure about fire because I do not want to risk the house catching fire with no way of escape.

It seems like the tried and true method holds firm.  Trauma to the head keeps em down.

I have still yet to hear anything on the radio or the TV that suggests what caused it.

The radio and TV are still airing in my area obviously, but it is sporadic and not much help yet.

------------------------------------------------------------

I feel like I am losing it a little bit.  My wife has still yet to speak although she is still receptive which is a plus.  My buddy Sean is still here and I thank God he got through the hordes outside to make it here because without him here and the constant moaning and knocking I may have lost my mind by now.

I hope all of you made it out or are safe wherever you are.  I just wish I knew.

I am not sure what we are going to do.  Seems like we have run through every possible option, but I will not give up hope.  Maybe something outside the house will distract them enough for us to make our get away.

Wait a second! I think I have idea!

I will hopefully see some of you later!

“Sean!  Hey man I think I have an idea!”  I said as I started walking into the front room.

“Dude we have tried everything.  We have been talking about this for the past 5 days.”

He was sitting in the front room on the couch across from my wife who was still kind of lost in her own world.  He was always kind of a pretty boy, but he was a carpenter by trade so he was not a wimp, but these days he was looking pretty haggard.  Wearing the same jeans and shirt he was wearing when he first came by because my clothes were too tight on him.  I am 5’10” 185 and he is 6’2” 215.  He had been in a foul mood since getting here.  He didn’t put any kind of blame on our current situation on me, but he was sour none the less.

I am sure the relentless pounding is wearing on him.  It is wearing on me.  It is nonstop and while I am fairly confident that we are safe it wears on your nerves knowing what the things outside would do if they got in.

“Yeah but we are really desperate now, right?  I mean we can’t stay here.  We HAVE to get out so I started expanding on what I thought was possible and came up with something.”

“Alright well are you planning on sharing this ‘something’ with me so we can talk about whether or not it will work?”  He said with a little edge to his voice.

“Alright, alright relax.  It is going to take a lot of labor and I am not even sure if we can make it work and I am also not sure if it will be safe, but what is anymore?”

“Dude if you don’t tell me what you are thinking soon I will…….”

“We dig a tunnel!”  I interrupted him because I didn’t want to hear what he would do.  I am sure he was just joking, but like I said his nerves are frayed at best right now.

“A tunnel?  Uhhhh dude we have to be outside on earth to dig a tunnel.  How do we dig a tunnel through concrete?”  His tone seemed to lighten a little most likely just at the possibility of discussing a new idea.

“Well like I said it is not going to be easy, but I was thinking we could start digging the bricks out of the basement wall and start from there.  The power is still on and we have use of power tools so we should be able to get through the brick.  My main concern was the house falling down around us, but if we start right in the middle of the wall I think it will be ok.  You are the carpenter I figured you would know more about the possibility of the house falling on our heads if we do that.  I am not as concerned about the noise because shit dude we cannot get more surrounded than we already are.  They are 30-40 deep out there.”

One of our earlier failed attempts at getting out had us throwing a radio out as far as we could to distract them from our position and while some of the zombies went towards the sound it was not enough for us to make a quick retreat and it just brought more zombies to the house.  The opening was too small to risk and we could not get the radio far enough away from the house.  Once the damn zombies converged on the radio one of the dumb bastards picked it up and started chewing on it and it died a few minutes after we threw it.  They just turned around and came right back to the house.  They brought some of their friends with them and now it is a snowball effect.  I am guessing everyone else on my block is either dead or bugged out a long time ago because it seems like every zombie within 3-4 blocks is converging on my house focusing on the sounds of the dead moaning and banging on my house.

“Hmmmmmm.  That actually may work.  We could either try to brace the wall before we start or just let the thing fall if it does.  The house will just lean to the side and get stopped by the earth outside.  It is obviously not something you would have wanted before all this, but who gives a shit now if your house falls to the side a little.  I would be worried that if it leaned to the side it may dislodge some of the wood we put up and give them a window to get through, but like I said we could try to brace it before we started digging. Yeah the more I think of it the more I think we do not want the house to fall to the side.  Too many possibilities it will crack the foundation or create a weak spot in the house.  That just brings me back to the idea of bracing it, but we have to find something to brace it with.  We used up just about every ounce of wood in your house to secure the doors and windows.”

He said all of that in about 5 seconds.  He was rattling all this off as it occurred to him.  He sounded excited at the idea.

I stood there watching him think about it.  I started walking over to where my wife was sitting on the couch.  She didn’t really show any emotion at my idea.  I am not even sure if she heard what we were talking about.  She kind of goes in and out of what I have been calling a comprehensive state.  Sometimes staring blankly ahead and other times it almost looks like she is ready to break out of it and say something.

I reached where she was sitting and put my hand on her shoulder.  I knelt down in front of her and asked her if she thought it was a good idea.  She just stared ahead.  I was worried when this first started, but the longer it goes on the more I feel like it may not stop and my worry is turning into outright panic.  I am more worried about her condition than I am the zombies outside.  I am not sure how long someone can be in that state and snap out of it, but I hope she is not lost.

I started brushing the hair away from her face as I looked back over at Sean who had gotten up from his seat and was pacing.  He was mumbling to himself.

“So dude, what do you think?”  I asked as I continued to brush the hair from my wife’s face.

“It will take forever, but I think we may be able to make it work.  I am just trying to think of how we can brace the joists in the basement ceiling and try to shore up the tunnel.  I mean what is going to stop the earth from caving in on us?  We have to brace it with something.”  He said as he continued to pace.

I stood up fast from my kneeling position.  “Dude!  This is going to work!  We just take the walls down and use the studs in the walls!”

“Uhhhh if we take the walls down what keeps the zombies from pouring in?”  He asked.

“Not the outside walls.  We take down these interior walls and use the wood from that to secure the tunnel and brace the ceiling!”  I said excitedly.

“Yeah.”  He said a little slow bringing his hand up to his chin thinking it over.

“Yeah!”  He said again with a little more enthusiasm after he thought it over and realized it would work.

“Good freaking idea man!”  He said clapping his hands in front of him.

“Well you guys didn’t call me the zombie guy for nothing!  I am just surprised it took me this long to figure it out.”

“When do you want to start?”  Still standing in the middle of the room Sean looked almost giddy with excitement.

“No time like the present!”  I told him actually feeling a little good about the whole thing myself.

So we spent the next 10 hours working on ripping walls down and trying to make sure the ceiling didn’t cave in on us.  We heard some creaks and moans from the house in protest to what we were doing, but all in all we felt like the structure was sound enough to last a few days.  We used circular saws, reciprocating saws, hand saws, hammers, roto zips, and anything else we could get our hands on to bring the walls down.  We had a nice little collection of wood along with some good size pieces of drywall that we were going to use to help brace the tunnel sitting in the basement waiting for us to get started.  We didn’t really do any calculations yet on how much wood we were going to need because we had to make it work no matter if it was enough or not.

It was night time when we finished and after all the noise we were making inside I finally started to hear the moans of the zombies outside again.  It sounded louder than before and I thought that was odd because of all the noise we were making in the house I figured when we were done and it was quite again that the sound of the moans from the outside would not be as loud.  I figured my ears would be ringing from all the power tools we were using and they would pick up less, but for some reason it picked up more.  Weird.

“Hey Sean!  Does it sound like the moans are louder than before?”

“I can’t really tell man my ears are ringing.  Why?”  He asked.

“I don’t know they just do.  Whatever man, let’s get some sleep and get an early start tomorrow I am beat!”

Calling what we did at night ‘sleep’ was not really accurate it was more rest than sleep.  It was half impossible to sleep when that’s all you heard were moans and arms, fists, and open palms slapping against every inch of your house.  It really was a good thing those things lacked any kind of power.

I looked over at my wife and saw that she was not sleeping either, but she was looking at me which was a good thing and it almost looked like she was focused on me and not some far off world.  I started running my hand over her forehead to push the hair out of her face.  I leaned in a little and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“I think this idea is going to work baby.”  I whispered to her.

“Once we get out of the house we can try to make it to my folks place in Montana.  It is very isolated and we have a good place to try and start over or wait this out.  I am sure there are experts working in some underground facility right now trying to come up with an anecdote for this or trying to figure a way to cure those things outside.”  I told her as I continued to brush the hair from her face.

“I love you baby.”

“I love you too.”

I shot up in bed and looked at her and she even managed a little smile.  It was the sweetest thing I have seen since before this started.  I used both hands to brush the hair from her face and held her at arm’s length, looking deep in her beautiful brown eyes with her face in my hands.

“Baby!?  You are ok?”  I blurted out.

“Yeah baby I am ok now.”  I started crying and hugged her again.  She returned the hug in earnest.  We sat up in the bed embracing both of us crying like little kids whispering things back and forth.

“I love you so much.”

“I forgive you.”

“I will never let anyone hurt you.”

“I am so sorry about your mom.”

“I love you.”

“I am so scared.”

“Shhhhh it will be alright.”

It went on and on until we both finally let each other go and laid back down to fall asleep.  It was the best sleep I had since it started.

“John!  John!”  Sean was shaking me awake.

“Hey man!  Nadia is alright.”  I said as I leaned up to a sitting position on the bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.

“That’s great man, but I already know that she is in the living room.  She woke up about 20 minutes ago, but John we have a problem here.  I need you to come take a look at this.”  He was shouting and I just noticed how loud the moans were outside.

Crap they were so loud.  There was also another new sound added to the mix.  It was a high pitched buzzing sound.

“Why is it so damned loud out there?”  I asked him.

“Come on man take a look for yourself.”  He led me to the attic access that we used the week before to get him in the house.

Still groggy and rubbing the sleep from my eyes I made my way up the ladder wondering how the hell I was able to sleep through all this noise.  I made my way to the hole I made half crouching, half walking as to not hit my head on the roof joists and positioned myself under the hole and I stood up straight to look outside.

I was floored at what I saw.  The whole street was filled with zombies.  They were piled 3-4 deep high in some areas where a zombie fell and another one just stood on top of him.  The whole scene looked like an ocean moving and swaying from side to side and up and down as the zombies that were trapped under those above tried to stand up.  As far as I could see up and down the street this scene replayed itself.  I looked in every direction and could only see past the horde of zombies towards the back of the house.  My back gate was left open from when Sean ran through and they were flooded in my backyard, but the neighbors behind me had their gate locked.  They always kept it locked and thank God because that was the only clear area in any direction.

I kept looking back and forth.  They were literally everywhere.  We were completely surrounded by thousands of zombies.  I finally saw what the buzzing sound was.  Flies.  There were thousands of flies intermixed with the horde and the smell finally hit me.  I threw up all down the side of the roof I was sticking out of.  A couple dozen of the closet zombies looked up as I heaved the last of yesterdays dinner down the side of the roof and they started reaching up in the air.

“Holy shit!  Holy shit!” I ducked back down and looked over at Sean who was crouching near the ladder access with a completely panicked look on his face.

“What the fuck happened?”  I yelled over to him as I started making my way back in a half crouch half walk.

“I don’t know man, but my guess is that all that noise we made yesterday drew them all in.”  He said as he made his way down the ladder.

“It looks like half the fucking city is on my street trying to get in this place.”  I said as I followed him down the ladder still wiping vomit from my chin.

We stood there at the bottom of the ladder just blankly looking at each other.  Nadia heard my decent and came running in the hallway almost knocking Sean off his feet to give me a hug.

“What are we going to do?  You will protect me like you said wont you?”  She said crying in my arms.

“Of course baby, of course.”  Hugging her tight I looked over her head at Sean shaking my head.  “What the fuck are we going to do dude?”

“Well they cannot get in at least not yet anyway.  Everything seems to be holding so let’s get started on what we planned yesterday.”  He said as he shrugged his shoulders.

“Yeah we are going to have to tunnel from the back of the house.  That is the only clear area I could see.”  Still holding Nadia in my arms I brought her out arms length and looked in her eyes.  “I am not going to let anything happen to you.  Sean and I are going to start working on the tunnel.

“Don’t leave me.”  She cried grabbing me around the waist again.

“I am not going to leave you baby.  Come on you can help bring some more supplies to the basement.  I think we should take everything down there and barricade the basement door just in case they get in.  We are staying in the basement until the tunnel is done.”  I said to Sean as I looked over her head at him again.

He was shaking his head up and down in agreement of my plans.

“Let’s go!”

Every bit of food and that was in the house was in the basement.  Every bottle of water and every bottle with a top was filled to the brim with water and capped was in the basement.  Everything we could use as a weapon including real weapons like my shotgun with all the shells were in the basement.  We blockaded the top of the stairs with the fridge and some lumber and we blockaded the bottom of the stairs with the stove, the couch, the love seat and some lumber.  We were essentially locked in the basement and if the tunnel idea didn’t work we were going to die down here.

I brought my BOB, the beds and everything we planned on taking with us when we traversed the tunnel.  It is all here and ready to go.

We got the cinder blocks removed from the portion of the wall we were going to start our tunnel through and so far the house didn’t crash down on us.  We did make a partition to help hold the wall up, but we didn’t use much wood and definitely didn’t use what a building code would say we needed for a support wall, but we had to keep as much wood as we could to shore up the tunnel.  Sean and I both took one last look towards the back of the house from the roof to estimate how many feet we had to dig and to make sure we started in the right spot before we barricaded ourselves downstairs.

“That looks weird.”  I said looking at the circle of dirt in front of us.

“Yeah it does.”  Sean said standing next to me.

“I wonder how much wood we are going to need to shore up the tunnel?”

“We already talked about that.  Nothing we can do about it.  We will have to make do with what we have.”  Sean said.

“What is that about 6 feet?”  I asked indicating the distance from the top of the grass in my backyard to the top of the hole we were about to start digging.  “I wonder how much extra pressure will be on the tunnel considering there are about 200 zombies packed shoulder to shoulder in my backyard?”

“Hopefully not much.”

“You ready?”  I asked Sean not sure if I was ready myself.

“Yup.  Let’s do this.”  He said.

The plan was that I was going to dig and Sean would erect the supports behind me as I went.  Nadia was to take the dirt that I threw on the ground in the basement and start a pile in the furthest corner of the basement.   Sean and I actually switched up at the start because only one person could really work at a given time so I made a hole 4’ in diameter and started digging away and then handed the shovel to Sean.  We would each dig for about an hour while the other person helped Nadia move the dirt to the corner.  Once we got deep enough to be lying completely in the tunnel we would start putting braces up.

That took about 3 hours.  So stage one was complete.  We stopped to take a break and looked at the hole beginning to form in the wall of my basement.  We had 3 studs on either side nailed to studs running across the top with a couple pieces of drywall on the top to prevent a cave in.  It looked fairly secure, but we had a long way to go.  We had estimated that we needed to go at least 80 feet to get behind the horde that was packed in my backyard.  That would lead to my neighbors backyard.  The last time I checked the horde did not go beyond the alley in the back.  The neighbors backyard was clear.  If we tried to go in any other direction we would have had to dig forever because they were all merging on my street and for some reason the street over to the back of the house where we were digging was clear.  I didn’t question it I was just thankful that it was clear.

“Digging is fucking tiring man.”  I said standing in front of the hole looking in.  “I should have went to the gym more.”

Sean kept looking straight ahead while Nadia was laying down on the bed in the other corner opposite the mound of dirt that was piling up.  He didn’t say a word.

“Hey man.”  I said snapping my fingers in front of his face.

He shook his head and looked over in my direction.

“What are going to do even if we make it out of here man?  There are thousands on your street alone.  We won’t make it 2 blocks before we are surrounded.”

“We will have to be careful is all.  I am not 100% sure what we are going to do once we get back topside, but one step at a time man.  Let’s not look too far ahead.  Let’s try to get this tunnel done and try to get through it alive.  We will worry about what happens after that later.”  I said as I put a hand on his shoulder.

“Dude we are fucked!”  He said raising his voice a little.  “No way we are going to fucking make it 10 feet.”

I put my hand over his mouth.  “Shut the fuck up with that shit!”  I said in a low voice looking over my shoulder where Nadia was laying.  Luckily she was not paying attention to our conversation.  “Dude my wife just came back to reality and I am trying to keep shit positive.  I don’t want her descending back into whatever state of mind she was in before.”  I said as I took my hand away from his mouth.

“You’re right man.  Sorry.  I just don’t know what we are going to do.”

I grabbed him by the shoulders and faced him directly.  “You know what we are NOT going to do?  Fucking panic man!  That is what we are not going to do.  I don’t give a shit if we are the last people on the planet.  We are going to make it out of this shit.”  I said as I looked over at Nadia again.

She was still laying on the bed with her eyes closed paying us no attention.

He didn’t say anything, but he did nod in the affirmative.

“Alright!  Now let’s get back to work.  Whose turn was it to dig?”

I don’t have much time here guys.  I am bone tired and have been working around the clock the past few days.  I found a way for us to get out, but it is going to take some time and energy.

We are completely surrounded.  There are thousands right outside my door.  We are barricaded in the basement with everything we need and we are going to try and tunnel out.  It is slow going and we had a couple cave ins, but we are making progress.  We are about half way to our goal of 80 feet.  The first few feet were quick, but as I said we have had some cave ins.

Nothing has changed with our plans.  We are still going to try and get to Montana.  Power is still going strong in my area (obviously) and so is the internet (another obviously).

I wish someone would respond to let me know if anyone made it.  I am starting to feel like Sean, Nadia and myself are the last people on earth still alive.  If no one from this forum made it I hold little hope for anyone.

Nadia and Sean are both sleeping right now and I am about to fall asleep myself, but I wanted to update the forum just in case someone is still alive out there.

We have about 40 feet left and hopefully we will be breathing fresh air again soon.  Even though I would consider the zombies surrounding my house ‘fresh’ they still smell like shit and the smell is completely engulfing the house.

Well I hope some of you are still alive.

Sean and I dug until our hands were sore with blisters and are backs were screaming from over work, but we were finally at 80 feet.  I am hoping to hell 80 feet is still enough and I have considered going back up to check to make sure the numbers of the dead have not yet reached the block behind us, but I really do not want to risk it.  We have a plan to dig straight up and go slow and be careful so we can remove a small piece of earth and send up a small mirror to look around and make sure it was still safe before we push through.  We just finished making our final measurement and have been digging for about 6 hours straight.  All of us are eager to be on our way.  I think it is going to be therapeutic to get topside and possibly put some slugs in the dead.

I have had a growing anxiety ever since we measured at 70 feet which was early yesterday.  I am still happy we are going to get out of the confinement of the basement, but I know what awaits us topside.  I am not sure how we are going to get to a working vehicle let alone get all the way across the country when it has taken us so long just to get out of the house.  None of us knows how to hotwire a car so we are going to have to find keys to a vehicle or try to find a way to make it to a safe area on foot.

We really need to sit down and come up with a good plan once we get topside.

“Alright so let’s put our heads together here and figure this out.”  I said sitting on the edge of the bed eating a can of beef stew.

“What do you mean?”  Nadia asked laying on the bed behind me.

“I mean what we are going to do once we get topside.”

“I thought you had that all figured out.”  Sean said sitting on the bed across from us.

I looked around the basement which had turned into a complete mess.  Dirt was everywhere I looked.  We had some trouble piling the dirt up and keeping it away from the digging area and away from where we slept.  It was piled up in all the corners of the basement and completely surrounded the beds we were sitting on now.  It didn’t reach the ceiling, but it created little slopes up the sides of each corner of the basement.

We were all filthy and covered pretty much head to toe in dirt.

“Sean you know what?  You look like shit!  Maybe we should finish eating and wash up real quick before we figure out what we are going to do?”

“What do you mean?  I thought you had that figured out?”  He said putting his spoon back in the can of beans he was eating.

“I said one step at a time.  Remember that?  Remember when I said what we were not going to do?  You know the freak out part?  I am not sure what we are going to do, but we need to figure out a plan real quick before we go blazing up to the surface like Rambo or something.”

“I just thought you already had a plan.”  Sean said mumbling to himself.

“Well I do kind of have a plan, but I want to see if you guys like the idea or what you think we should do.  This is not a dictatorship.”  I said standing up.

“Alright.  I will grab a bucket with some fresh water and a couple rags so we can clean up and figure this out.”  Nadia said as she got up from the bed.

We spent the next 20 minutes or so getting as clean as we could in relative silence.  I think everyone was going over different ideas or scenarios in their mind before we sat to discuss it.  Or they may have been thinking about the shit we were about to put ourselves in.  The only talk came when Nadia asked Sean to turn around so she could strip and clean her whole body.  Seeing her naked body while she washed really got me excited.  Almost like the first time I saw her naked.  She had a great body and she was a great wife.  For a second I almost wished Sean hadn’t made it so I could grab her and make love to her before we went up top.  It may have been the last chance I would ever get.  I quickly shook off the feeling and decided that is what I was living for at the moment.  I wanted to make love to my wife again and that would be my focus for now.

Ever since this whole thing started I had given myself little goals to achieve to get me through.  When it first started it was getting as many supplies together as I could and planning where to go.  Then it turned to protecting my wife while she was in her trance like  state and trying to help her through that.  Then it was the tunnel.  Now it was to make it to a place that I could be alone with my wife again.  After that?  I am not sure.  That’s the beauty of not looking too far ahead.

“So I was thinking that once we get topside we high tail it as quickly and quietly as we can to the neighbors house and try to secure a way in.  I want to try and find keys to a car or something so we can get out of this area.  I have no idea how bad it is, but it cannot be worse than what we have here.  I mean I think we literally have a quarter of the city trying to get in my house.  So first things first in my opinion.  Get topside and try to get in the neighbors house without drawing the attention of the zombies in our backyard or any that may be around the neighbors place, look for keys and then figure out where to go from there.”  I said as I slid a new shirt over my body.

Sean was still facing the other direction and Nadia had just finished putting new clothes on.

“You can turn around now Sean.”  Nadia said.

“Alright that sounds like a plan.”  Sean said as he turned back to look at us.

“Sounds good to me.”  Nadia said shrugging her shoulders.

So there we were all laying on our backs with back packs laying on our stomachs.  Doing an upside down worm crawl.  Wriggling our way to the end of the tunnel.  I was in front, Nadia was in the middle and Sean was bringing up the rear.  Nadia was pointing a flashlight towards the front of the tunnel.  I was about 5 feet from getting to the bend towards the grass.  We had maybe a foot of earth to dig through to get to the top.  Man I hope it is clear.

“Watch that piece of wood to your left.  I knocked it as I was sliding by and it shifted a little.”

“Great we are going to get fucking buried in the very tunnel that was supposed to save our asses.”  Sean joked.

“Shut up Sean!  I am freaking out a little.”  Nadia yelled at him.

“Shhhhhh.  I am not sure how far sound carries through dirt.  The moans have died down big time in the last 10 feet or so, but I do not want to risk anything.”  I said.

“I hope that means that there are no zombies above us.”  Sean said much quieter from the back.

“Me too.”  Nadia and I both said at the same time in the same hushed tone.

Finally we got to the end of the tunnel and my anxiety really started bubbling up to the surface.  If there were no zombies above us we would be topside in less than 5 minutes.  I started to make a mental check list of all the weapons I had on me.  There weren’t many.

I had a machete strapped on my left leg that I got from Alex from the Morningstar Forum.

I had the shotgun, fully loaded which was now sitting under my BOB right across my chest.  The barrel was right in my face facing slightly to my left just in case.  If for some reason it went off right now I would be deaf for the rest of my life, but at least my face wouldn’t get blown off.

I have a kitchen knife wrapped up in a towel in my BOB and that was about it.

After getting safely to a vehicle procuring some more weapons was next on my list.

“Alright well it is show time.  You guys know the plan.  I will make a small hole and check around and if the coast is clear I will finish the hole and then cover you guys as you come through after I make it out.”  I said as I started maneuvering around in the tunnel to stand up in the hole that was leading to the last little piece of earth protecting us from the zombies outside.

“Now remember be very quiet.  We know those fucking things still have working ears and once that hole is open the sound will definitely carry.”

I was squatting down in the hole now looking back over at them.  Nadia looked scared as hell.  Her head was now right at the end of the hole looking up.  If the hole was already dug out above she would have been looking directly at the sky above.  I looked down and kissed her forehead.

“Don’t worry baby.”  I whispered.

“I will be ok.  Now scoot back a little so the dirt from the hole doesn’t land in your face.”

I stood straight up in the hole.  If there were in fact zombies above us they would almost literally be walking on my head right now.  If there was one directly above me he would have fallen through the little bit of earth above and he would be sharing this hole with me right now.  That made me feel a little better, knowing that there shouldn’t be any zombies above, but it didn’t really help my anxiety any which had built up to the point where I could feel each beat of my heart in my ears.

For some reason I started thinking about the first zombie I saw when this started.  The day I saw it was the last day I went to work and it was the last normal day I spent since.  I was driving home like any normal day.  Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until I saw it shuffling down the street as I rounded the corner to my block.  It was about half way between me and my house when I first saw it.  Wearing a grey suit with its head at an almost impossible angle to its body.  At first I didn’t know what to make of it.  I was driving towards it the whole time I couldn’t take my eyes off it.  No one else was on the street which was fairly normal there was almost never any activity on the street.  It was mostly old people and younger people with no young kids.

As I got closer to it I noticed that there was a huge chunk of flesh missing from the left side of its neck.  That was why its head was leaning to the side like it was.  I kept driving looking back over my shoulder as I passed it.  It turned towards the street as I drove by and then changed direction and started towards the house following the sound of the car.  I slowed down after I passed it and kept looking in my rear view mirror trying to figure it out.  Finally the car came to a stop as I turned in my seat.  It kept shuffling towards the car.  I knew almost instantly that I was not going to work tomorrow and what seeing that one person shuffling on my street meant.

“Are you going to start digging or what?”  I heard Sean whisper.

You have to be fucking kidding me........ The whole fucking world goes to shit, everyone I care about is dead, and still walking around! So I was at work and it started...... first one of them acting crazy and running around the lot. The he bites a guy and then they are all over. Luckily I keep a Bug out bag in my truck and a 30-30. I dropped everything and blew out...... I left everyone I work with and drove like a madman to get back to my house. You see I work about 36 miles from home in a Semi-Rural area and I live in a town of 175,000. Needless to say by the time I got close it was a full blown panic with riots and the undead everywhere. I ran over a dozen people, I don't know if they were infected or not but one of them mangled the front of the truck pretty good...... I pushed it as far as I could but you can only go so far without coolant. I was about 3 miles from the house when it seized up on me. I grabbed my bag and the 30-30 and hoofed it from there. I think I can make it, I scoped out some back area's before this all went down and there is a powerline right of way that runs right by the house. If I can keep a low profile and not draw any attention I should make it. God help me if I don't I need some wheels and a little more protection than this old 30-30 and the 40 rounds I kept in the truck!

I made it...... Barely! I am single again too. My fiancee knew that the only place to go if something happened was to my house the only problem was she got here first. I wish she would have taken the Glock I tried to give her. Her car was in the front yard and from the looks of things they got her as she was trying to get to the door. It was just minutes before me, she re-animated as I watched from the cover of the house across the street. Though tears I finished her off one shot one kill....... I suppose I will probably break down but my anger overcame emotions and I let loose. I put 5 of them down and ran like hell! Thankfully they are not too smart I ran around the houses and jumped a chainlink fence that is holding them for now. I need to hole up here and keep a eye out for anyone else to show. I wonder if my folks are going to make it. They always thought I was a little crazy for keeping all of those guns and having a bunch a food stored. Who's laughing now? I just hope that someone makes it.... I don't want to do this by myself. Funny thing is I always thought that there would be no electricity, no water, nor flushing toilets, no Internet.......wait the cell phones have been jammed up but I have Internet! I better see if I can reach out to anyone that way!

Panic took hold of me.  I couldn’t move.  My breath became haggard and shallow and I started feeling dizzy.  My eyes filled with little fading stars at the edge of my vision.  I broke out in a cold sweat.  I started swaying on my feet.

“How long has he been out?”

“About 5 minutes.”

“Do you think we should start dragging him back to the basement?”

“I am not sure we will make it without knocking those supports off the tunnel walls.”

“We can’t just lay here forever.”

“What happened?”  I asked as I started to try and blink my head clear.

My left leg felt numb.

“Oh baby!  Thank God you’re ok!”  Nadia said.

“Where are we?  Why is my leg numb?”

“Dude you passed out.”  I heard Sean say from a distance.

“Really?  What the fuck?  I have never passed out before.  That was pretty sweet!”  I said as I started getting my bearings and trying to stand up again.

“That was not sweet!”  They both said in unison.

“Well it kind of was.”

I was able to get back to my feet, but I was hoping on my right leg a little to keep pressure off my left leg.  It got stuck under me at a weird angle when I passed out and it was numb.  It wasn’t broke thank god, but it did need a couple minutes to get back to normal.  I had to duck down a little and half hop on my right leg until the tingly feeling went away.  If we weren’t about to face thousands of zombies it would have been a little funny.

“Wow!  I wonder how the fuck that happened?”  I said I was doing my troll hop trying to get circulation back in my left leg.

“Gee I dunno.  You are about to break ground on a tunnel we had to build to escape a horde of zombies only to most likely come face to face with those zombies.  My guess is that you are a pussy!”  Sean joked.

“Overload I guess.”

A couple of tense minutes went by as I tried to regain the feeling in my leg.  No other words were spoken, but Nadia was looking up at me with a very concerned look on her face.  I was not real sure why.  I had never passed out before so I am sure it is not a big deal.  I guess I would look concerned if she just passed out also.

“Alright are you guys still ready?”  I whispered.

“We are ready, but are you?”  Nadia whispered back.

I responded by grabbing the small digging shovel from my jacket and plunging it in the dirt above my head.  A little loose dirt fell down below as the shovel broke the surface.  I repeated this process 3 times almost completing a square shape.  I pulled the little square of grass down so I could fit the little mirror taped to the small broken piece of broom handle through the hole to make sure the coast was clear.

I raised the little mirror very slowly through the hole just barely breaking the surface.  I completed a 360 degree inspection of the yard we were in and couldn’t see any zombies on this side of the fence.  The fence was made of wood and was about 5 feet tall so I could not see beyond the fence towards the alley, but I didn’t really care what was in the alley because as long as we were careful and quite we didn’t have to worry about the other side of the fence.

The all familiar buzzing of the flies was heard loud and clear now coming from the direction of the alley.  We now had the neighbors house to my right and the alley to the left with houses on both sides.  I repeated reconnaissance for 20 minutes making sure we were not going to end up as lunch for one of those fuckers.  I even fixed the mirror at an angle which made it possible for me to see the windows of the house we were about to try and break into.  I kept the mirror on each window of the house for a couple minutes making sure I could not see a curtain move or see a reflection or a shadow of something moving within. Once I was as confident as I could be I started making the hole bigger.

“Alright, now again once I am topside I will crouch down next to the hole to help you guys through and keep a look out.  Once we are all up we keep low and head for the house.  The door is to the right of the house by the driveway, but before we go rounding that corner we have to make sure none of those fuckers are in the street or will be able to see us trying to get in.”  I said in a whisper as I was kneeling down looking back through the hole at both of them.  They both nodded in agreement.

The smell finally hit me again and I had to concentrate to keep from throwing up again.  It was not as bad as it was from the roof of the house, but it was still lingering.  I made my way through the hole and called down for Nadia to make her way up.  I took the couple seconds to look around again this time from ground level.  Everything looked about the same.  I didn’t see any zombies, but something I could see now that I couldn’t see before was the truck in the driveway.  At least their car was here which hopefully meant there were keys in the house somewhere.  The buzzing from the flies and the moans from the zombies on the other side of the fence were constant.  I had gotten used to that sound the last couple weeks to the point where it was almost just back ground noise. Not hearing it for the hour or so we were in the tunnel brought it all back to the forefront once I was topside again.

Once we were all topside we started moving in a low crouch towards the house.  To our right was the garage and the driveway along with the truck.  It was a newer model Dodge Ram, black with big chrome rims and a solid fiberglass tanneau cover over the bed.  It was a solid vehicle and I was very glad to see it sitting in the driveway.

“Alright the plan has changed."  I said as we came closer to the truck.  "I am going to go check the truck to see if the keys are in there.”

“Dude the keys will not be in the truck and it probably has an alarm.  You go fucking with that thing and the alarm goes off we are fucked!”  Sean whispered.

“You’re right, but I am not going to tug on the damn thing.  I am just going to take a peek inside and try the door.”

“I don’t like it man.  If the guy has his alarm set real sensitive it will go off even with a small tug.  We can’t risk it man.”  He said again.

“Alright I am just going to have a look.  I won’t tug the handle.  You guys stay next to the garage.”

The garage was separate from the house and it sat a little off to the side so if they stayed close to the side they would not be in the view of the street.  The driver side door was closest to where we were and was also a little out of view of the street so I would be covered.

I walked over to the side of the truck and kept my head on a swivel and keeping my ears open.  I peeked inside, but couldn’t see the keys.

“Alright.”  I whispered as I walked back towards them.  “No keys so we will have to find a way in the house.  Hopefully the people who lived there are gone.”

“The truck is still here.  Why would they be gone?”  Nadia asked.

“Well they could have had 2 cars or maybe they got caught up outside during all of this.”

“They could still be in the house.”  She said a little nervously.

“Maybe, but I didn’t see any kind of movement when I checked it out.  Man the more I am thinking about this….Maybe I should check it out alone.  If there is someone in there alive or dead there is no sense in risking all of us.”

“You guys stay in the back of the house and I will check it out.”

“Dude you have a wife right next to you here.  My family is gone.  I will check out the house and you stay here and protect your wife.  If I need help I will yell out.”  Sean said.

“Man you don’t have a weapon.”  I said.

“I’ll be alright man.  I am sure the house is empty and we are all going to have to take some risks in the coming weeks to get through this.  I will check the house out you stay here with your wife.”

“Alright dude, but you are taking this.”  I said as I started un strapping the machete from my leg.

“yeah cool.  That will work.”

Its been 3 days........ My finacee is dead, I just about ate up all the fresh food in the house (Now that was a chore, I am bloated but well fed). I have been working to get all the gear together and figure out what my next step will be. I checked in to some of the forums I frequent and there is this guy John_Brian_k that said he was bugging out to someplace called Kalispell Montana. Goddamn thats 1,591 miles from the Chicago suburbs. I don't know if I should risk it but what if I get up to my cabin in Wi and there is no one else to be found? I can't deal with this myself! I have managed to keep a pretty low profile there are a few of those slow moving Z's around the fenceline but those runners left after the first few hours. They must have seen something that distracted them. I have to link up with someone....... I have a TON of shit! Literally! Fuck I got 2 dozen firearms and by my count...... 12,862 rounds of ammo. Its gonna be tough to load it all in my Suburban. On top of that you have all the camping gear, clothes, food, generator, 2 55 gallon drums of gas, and of course a little porn ( A man has needs). Well I better get this shit together and figure out what I am gonna do.

Rogue and Redneck!  You guys made it!  Awesome!  SOOO glad someone else made it from the forum here.  I wish I would have saw your post before I left Redneck that would have been a sweet idea.

Well we made it out of the basement and made it to the house behind mine and we are relatively safe for the moment.  My buddy Sean tried finding keys to a big Ram truck in the driveway, but he couldn’t find anything.  He did clear the house though and we all went inside to try and look for the keys.  No luck of course.  They must be jingling around inside some zombies pocket outside now, most likely pounding on my house as we speak.  I swear half the city is surrounding the house.

We have been looking for the keys for the past few hours and if we do not find them I am going to try and see if I can find some articles online on how to disable an alarm system and hot wire a car.  If I am not confident I can do that without drawing too much attention to us I think we may have to leave on foot and try a different house.  You would think it would be easy.  Just move to a new house and try to find keys to a car, but the mental stress alone is enough to make you not want to leave the comfort and relative safety of this house.

There are not many in the street outside the house, but enough to make me not want to draw their attention.  Who knows how many may be just around the corner.  We may have to wait around here until night time to leave if we do not try to hotwire the car or find the keys.  I think I can find an article or two on hot wiring, but the alarm has me spooked.  If I knew for 100% certainty that I could hot wire the car in seconds I would have no problem, but I do not know how long it will take me so if the alarm goes off and they start surrounding us we are fucked.  And disarming the alarm freaks me out also because I am afraid to even touch that truck without the keypad to turn the alarm off.

We will see what happens.  I am starting to re think our bug out location.  Originally I figured it would be a good idea, but I am not sure now.  The more I think of it the more I am thinking of an island somewhere.

Hopefully the internet will stay up for a while so that if we do change our location I can let all of you know.  As of now we are still going to head to Kalispell, MT.

“Did you find anything down there?”  I asked Sean as he headed up from the basement.

“Nope.  I looked through all the dirty laundry, but nothing.”

“You have been keeping an eye out for weapons too I assume?”

“Yeah I haven’t come across a gun or anything yet either.”

We both walked into the front room and sat on the couch stopping to think for a minute.  The house was very similar to mine so the layout was familiar and I was trying to think of places where the owner may have kept a gun.

The front room had big dark drapes covering the windows and we had pulled the drapes closed before we even started our search.  No way anything from the front of the house could see in here so we were relatively safe for the time being.

“I am going to go see if Nadia has found anything.”  I told him as I got up from the couch.

I made my way around the house trying to be quite looking for my wife.  She was in the bedroom rummaging through a closet in the master bedroom.

“Hey baby.”

“I can’t find anything that will help us.  Nothing!  No guns, no keys, nothing!”  She said exasperated.

“Let me have a look.  A fresh set of eyes.”

“Go ahead.”  She said as she backed away from the closet.

I just stood in front of the closet for a second doing a quick sweep with my eyes.  For some reason I started thinking about the movie Parenthood and the scene where the mom breaks into her sons room to look for drugs.

I poked my head in the closet and turned so I was looking at the top part of the wall just above the door on the inside of the closet.

“Bingo!”  I said.

“You found something?”

I pulled down a nice Remington shotgun.  It looked similar to the one strapped to my back, but this one looked much nicer.  I ran my hands down the steel barrel and marveled at the woodwork on the stock and the pump.  I checked the chamber and it looked like it was full.  I took the gun over to the bed and started ejecting the shells.  It was full all right.  8 shells sat on the bed.

“Now it’s time to find the shells.  Dude with this nice of a shotgun is going to have shells laying around somewhere!”  I said.

Sean came through the door a second later.  He had heard the shells getting ejected.

“It’s your lucky day dude!”  I said as I tossed the shotgun in the air towards him.  He snatched it out of the air and looked it over.

“Nice!  How many shells do we have for it?”

“Well I have 30 rounds in my pack for my shotgun and they will work with this gun too.  Plus I ejected 8.”

We spent the next hour or so looking for other things that may help us.  We still had not found the keys nor did we find more shells for the shotgun.  We all congregated to the front room again.  I was messing with a kitchen knife trying to figure a good way to keep it handy as opposed to leaving it in the back pack.  It wouldn’t do me a lot of good in my bag if I needed to use it quick.  Nadia was sitting next to me and Sean was sitting on the chair across from us.  I accidentally dropped the knife on the floor and bent down to pick it up and noticed something under the chair.  I didn’t say anything, but sat back up straight on the couch.

“Has anyone checked under the furniture?”  I asked.

Neither one of them answered, but they didn’t need to because their movement said it all.  They both got up and started looking under the furniture.

“I got em!”  Sean said a little too loud for my liking.

“SHHHHHHH!”  I said.

“Let’s go!” he said again a little too loud for my liking.

“Dude keep your voice down.  We don’t want to get surrounded again.”  I said as I stood up.

We all went to the back of the house where the truck was parked and peeked through the window.  Everything looked the same as it did earlier.  Sean lifted the keys and pointed the alarm pad at the truck and pushed the button.  It didn’t make any noise, but we saw the lights blink confirming it got the signal.

“Awesome.  Alright do we have everything we need?  Do you guys wanna grab some more food just in case?”  I asked.

“Fuck the food.  Let’s just get the fuck out of here.”  Sean said again.

I looked over at Nadia and she was shaking her head in the affirmative with a wide eyed look on her face.

“Alright!  Fuck it!  Let’s go!”

YO! If you are reading this .....

Attention forget everything!! I found a place for us all to go.

http://www.boldtcastle.com/visitorinfo/

It's an Island. 125 rooms, power station, food, heat and best of all as many boats as you could even need hell, they have a fucking STEAM powered ship. It's located in the middle of a river, if the river is fast enough it won't freeze so Z's will just sink.

Pass the word........ I think me and mine are going to hang tight for now. As soon as winter sets in, it's gonna be Ball-peen hammer "wack-a-mole" time here in the U.P. of MI!

Use the intercostal waterway or rail lines to move. Ya need to download as much map info as you can and print that shit off.
Stay off the main roads they are choked with cars,Z's and crazy ass people. TRUST NO ONE. Watch for guys dressed as NG troops/Red Cross/FEMA pretending to be there to help, they are not.

My scalp belt is full. Yeah, I think I may have gone off the deep end, Murdering assholes. What's really scary is me and my family seem to have taken on the roles of "Grand Protectors" here locally. Seems like everytime a bug farts somebody is calling us,(CB Chan 14) the EXACT oppisite of what I wanted, hell nobody was even supposed to know we're here..
It's fucking bullshit and my wife is to blame. 'we have to help them" fuck me.

On the lighter side my 15 year old cousin has 54 confirmed ?kills? from the nearby rooftop with a fucking .22 bolt action.(Sears And Robuck-I think it's a winchester old hevy fucker my mothers gun, guns older than I am) Kinda blows the whole beltfed rambo thing out of the water.

It's not bad enough the fucking dead are walking but there's scumbags killing the living. It's like every nut job closet seriel killer has made it thru unscathed....and instead of killing the dead they are purposly killing the living..... Be very leary of anyone who is alone.

Z infestation here is light, low pop and alot of gun happy people. Some dicksucker from Green Bay brought this shit here I heard it on the police scanner, and all hell broke loose, poor cops.
For the most part we have been using old hunting guns, .22's,30-30's shit like that. I did scoop 2 full-auto m4's the other day, I put them and the ammo away for a rainy day. What iam afraid of is the z's are going to move out of the big citys and into the countryside we're 40 miles from Green Bay,WI and about 40 from Escanaba,MI. I just pray the freeze gets here soon, if not we're gonna be fucked if those bastards come trick-or-treating.

Peace and keep you head on a swivle. RZH Out.

I cannot believe it has come to this guys.  We have all grown to like each other on this forum.  Day dreaming about what it would be like if the S REALLY did HTF.  Well here it is.  I am grabbing my BOB, my wife and my shotgun and we are heading to the mountains.

JBK, it's great to hear you survived the first couple of days.  It seems that RZH made it too by his first post, but he did not mention what's happening there.

Some of  my immediate family was barely able to made it out of Chicago's near suburbs. I suppose Chicago's gun ban resulted in plenty of victims for the Z's, so they did not pour out of the city in the numbers I had imagined.

I once thought I and my whole family would be undead by now, but life is stranger then fiction.

My brother and my new girlfriend were working downtown, when the disease or virus/whatever exploded across the city. I told my girlfriend to stay at home that day, but she thought I was being paranoid about all the initial reports of attacks and murders. I never heard from her after that last call.

My brother, while just as persistent as my girl friend, at least remembered some of our talks about what to do if the world goes to shit.  He told me (before the cell phones failed) that he was going to try to get out of the city by walking the subway line under the city, because the streets were a mass of undead and victims being eaten. He asked me to take care of his wife and three kids.  I told him we would all meet at my sister's home in Cary.

Cary is in northwest IL and has lots of people around who shoot and  hunt with bows and guns. However, we do not plan on staying too long. The city undead will start coming to the suburbs as soon as they have killed and eaten everyone.

I have not heard from my brother for over four weeks. His wife and kids still expect to see him again, but I now have little  hope.   My family and I are held up at my sister's. Her husband and two older boys are avid hunters and survivalist-types, so there is plenty of food and water for now.  We do have plenty of guns and ammo. We even traded some ammo with a nurse neighbor for some medical supplies for my older parents.

My nephew's dogs hate the undead and they begin to growl deep in their throats as the undead get too close. My nephew has over thirty undead kills with his compound bow. Our sub-division has been making short work of all the undead locally, but I fear the millions in Chicago will be here soon.

Our current plan is to leave very soon for Missouri. My brother-in-law has a good friend there with a huge farm, so we all think this the place where we hope to survive long-term.  However, before leaving, I wanted to find out what was going on around the country, so the men raided an local electronics store. We found a satellite phone with a data portal, so I began searching the Internet for info and found your post.

We don't know how long the satellite phone may work or much less the internet servers. I tried to call and email my brother who works in NY, but I could not get through to him.

Maybe we will correspond soon again, so take care and good luck.

God save us all.

DocT

PS. The government lied to all of us about this outbreak thing and now they are in the shit like us.

Guys, it was great to read your last few posts. I don't understand why those posts did not come up on my screen when I first logged into the site.  Blame it on the satellite or a server?? Data reception has been funky...

Anyway, JBK, where are you headed now? It must have been unreal to have been surrounded by those stinking, rotting pieces of shit for days. Keep posting updates until the site goes down!!

RZH, sorry to hear about the assholes you have had to put down like a rabid dog. The crazies and the undead have inherited the earth.  You would think that people in this Zombie world would realize that every living human life is now sacred. The real world, if it ever comes back, will be better off without those bastards polluting our air.

That island in the UP you mentioned sounds great, but way too far for us. Hope you have enough supplies until next spring. Don't forget to fortify the place in case the coming winter is bad. If the river freezes over, you may find you hate the new tourists that drop in for a visit.

Rogue, sorry to hear about your Lady.  We will all lose someone we love before this is all over. All over. Yeah, I know.  I may be fooling myself, but a man has to have some hope in God's plan, even if right now it sucks big time.

So where have you gone?  Sounds like you have the right equipment and provisions to survive, but don't let your guard down.  Since you are all alone, even the smallest mistake will kill you. Stay strong.

I will provide an update on my travels and travails in my next post (if the equipment still works).

Take care guys.

DocT.

I decided to come back on and check one more time before we left and I am glad I did.  I love that location RZH!  It is a hell of a lot closer than Kalispell and it is safer.  We should be able to make it mostly by water also which will make travelling a lot easier.  For the first time since this whole thing started I can see a future.  We will have to stop off somewhere and find a woman for Sean, but we should be able to reproduce and make the best of it!  J/K about finding a woman for Sean.  Anyway so I looked at a map and have the whole trip planned out as long as we do not run into a problem.  There is a boat dock about 10 miles from my house that would take us all the way to Niagara Falls before we ran into a problem.  I mean you cannot go over the falls in a boat so hopefully if we find a boat to take us the 250 miles or so to get to the falls we will have to abandon it there and go on foot about another 10 miles weaving our way in and out of a residential area along the river hopefully finding a working boat somewhere.  If we can find a boat there (We would be in Lewiston, NY by that time) another 280 miles or so to the castle!

I have no idea what to expect on this journey.  Can we find a boat that works?  Will we even make it to the dock?

I am not sure how long I will be able to keep communicating to you guys.  I am guessing most people have a computer like this house did, but how long will the internet stay up?  If everything goes according to plan you guys will not hear from me again for awhile.  So Even though this is (sort of) a goodbye it is good news because if it takes me 3 months before I can come back on that probably means we are safe at the castle.  I am guessing that most of you have already left your home and are looking for safety like I am, I just hope that this gets to some of you and we can meet up at the castle.

Boldt Castle

Alexandria Bay near Lake Ontario

This is where we are headed.  If we are going to have to deal with zombies we may as well try to deal with them in style.

Sean went out first then Nadia and I brought up the rear.  We made our way to the truck and Sean jumped in the driver’s seat and got ready to fire it up.  Before I got in the truck I scanned the area again and couldn’t see any threats nearby so I jumped in shotgun with my shotgun.

“Before I fire this thing up where are we going again?”  Sean asked.

“Outer Drive to Southfield Freeway man!”  I said with a little excitement in my voice for the first time in what felt like a year.

“I thought we were going to your parents place in Kalispell?  Isn’t Southfield freeway the wrong way to get started?”

“Yeah it is.  That is why we are going that way.”

Sean looked at me like I was going mad.

“Baby.  What’s wrong?”  Nadia asked from the back seat.  “Why do you want to go in the wrong direction?”

“Because it is the right direction!”  I said.

Now both of them were looking at me like I had just lost it.  I looked over towards Sean then I turned my head to look at Nadia in the back.  I had this big goofy smile on my face the whole time.  Nadia’s eyebrows were wrinkled with concentration like she was trying to gage my condition. An old habit from her time working as a nurse, I guess.  And it almost looked like Sean was eyeing the shotgun on the floor of the truck.

“Look a change of plan is all.  We have a new destination and one that should provide more protection and definitely provides more comfort than an old house in Kalispell.”

“Feel like filling us in on where we are headed?”  Sean asked as he was still looking me over.

I looked from him out the windshield towards the end of the driveway and noticed we had attracted a few zombies in the few minutes since our flight from the house.

“Sure I will tell you guys, but how about we get moving first.  Looks like we attracted a little attention.”

They both looked from me out the windshield and noticed about 4 of them shambling up the driveway towards the car.

“Fuck!”  Sean said.

“Not a big deal man.  Just mow them down.  I’ll tell you where we are going when we get a free minute.  No reason to talk about it now we have to concentrate on getting out of this area alive.”  I said a little more calm now.

“Yeah alright.”

Sean started the car up and it seemed to invigorate the 4 zombies coming at us from the driveway.  They didn’t really speed up, but they did have more of a purpose to their steps now that they could hear the truck start.  An old guy in his 50’s with grayish hair wearing slacks and a pink, short sleeve polo shirt.  Actually I think it used to be white.  A middle aged black man wearing jeans and a black t-shirt and 2 kids no older than 7-8 still in their pajamas.  All of them had visible bite marks.  Both kids had pieces missing from their cheeks and the guys both had big chunks of flesh and muscle missing from their right arms.  The garage was behind us and we had houses on either side of the driveway so the only way we were going to get by them was if Sean did just drive right over them.  That was not as easy as we thought it was going to be.

Sean started to accelerate towards them and of course they didn’t move so he kept going and he hit the first zombie going about 10 MPH and he fell backwards into the others and then we just kind of bounced up and down off them until we were turning into the street.  The sounds that made I will never forget.  Bones crunching, deep moans from the zombies as if they felt it.  I swear I even heard a pop from something.

I turned to look back as he turned on the street and all of them except for the youngest kid were crawling their way towards us.  It was a big pile of mess trying to squirm and wriggle towards the sound of the truck.  The black guys arms were both obviously broken and in his attempt to move them they flapped at unnatural angles.  The older guy was trying to stand up already and looked like he may actually accomplish this feat until he put too much pressure on a leg that was crushed and down he went right on top of the black guy.  I had to look away so I turned my head in the direction we were headed and the coast looked clear so far.

“Dude don’t you think Southfield Freeway will be jammed with cars?”  Sean asked as he turned onto Outer Drive Rd.

“It may be, but we will never know unless we try.  If we get close and it looks jammed up we will just have to try and find a different route.”

“A different route to where?”  Nadia asked from the back seat.

“Alright I do not want to get into to too many details right now because like I said we need to focus on the road, but we are heading to the Ecorse Boat Dock on Great Lakes Ave.”

“Ahhhhh.”  They both said in unison.

“That makes sense.”  Sean said as he weaved his way through a few cars left in the middle of the road.

“It doesn’t look too bad on Outer Drive here I hope we get lucky and have a semi clear road on Southfield.  Southfield will pretty much take us right to the boat dock.”  I said scanning the area for zombies.

“What about food?”  Nadia whispered from the backseat almost to herself.

“What’s that babe?”

“Food.  We do not have enough food to last a day on the water.  What are we going to do about food?  What about water?  What about ammo for the guns?  What about gas?”  She rifled off these question in quick succession.

“We have enough to last a couple days for sure, but you are right we will need to try and gather a few more supplies.  I guess the question is do we try and gather those supplies now or do we wait until we are on the water and find somewhere to dock up and go looking?”  I asked them both.

“I think we should just get to the boat.  I mean we are not even sure if we will find one there.”  Sean said.

“I don’t want to have to dock the boat in some area I am not familiar with.”  Nadia said.  “I shop around here all the time.  I know exactly where the stores are and the easy way to get in and out.  If we wait until we are a couple days ride from here we may have to spend days just looking for a store to get supplies from.”

“Yeah what she said.”  I told Sean.  “I know what you are saying Sean, but she is right we need to make sure we get as much as we can now while we know where it is.”

“Yeah alright whatever dude.  I am just the driver.  Like driving Miss Daisy or some shit.”  Sean cleared his voice and then tried his best Morgan Freeman impersonation.

“So, where to miss?”

“There is a Meijer on the hill by Southfield Freeway.  Just keep going straight and you run right into it.”  Nadia said completely missing his joke.

“As you wish.”  He said.

“Wrong movie dude!  That is the princess bride you are quoting now.”  I told him.

“Hey, it is the end of the world.  I think a little mixing of the movie quotes is excepted now.”

We rode on in silence for a few more minutes looking around and keeping an eye on any zombies that may have stumbled in the road.  Sean was a good driver and he expertly maneuvered around any crashes in the road or wandering zombies.  They were not everywhere like I would have expected them to be, but there were a few.  I think I counted 18 that I could see before I stopped counting.

“Southfield does not look that bad.”  Sean said as we came up to the road that would take us to the dock.

The road we were travelling on crossed over Southfield.  There was a small pedestrian bridge that we were driving across as we were all looking down on Southfield.  Meijer was awaiting just a few minutes ahead.  We could see the behemoth of a store awaiting us hopefully with fully stocked shelves.  Looking in the direction we were going to be headed in we all could see cars littered on the freeway, but nothing like I would have suspected.  I imagined cars on jam all up and down major freeways.  Apparently people didn’t have enough time to get in their cars before everything went to shit.  Or maybe people just decided to try and go in a different direction.  I hope they didn’t hear something about the river that I didn’t.

“Yeah not that bad.”  I confirmed.

Nadia was quite in the back seat.  We crept over the bridge and turned our attention back to the store.

Time to start figuring out how we would tackle the task ahead of us.

Finally! I managed to find a working computer in the house we holed up in. There's four of us here. Surprisingly, few encounters with infected, though when we did, it was... horrible, to say the least. Good on you for finding a good place to settle John! We haven't got a proper location yet and I don't think we can get to your castle, seeing as I'm in Aberdeen, Scotland. Well... there's a small chance, but I'm not going to risk anything yet. If anything, I'd say for you guys to get over here! Sure... you would have to leave America behind, but Scotland's temperatures in Winter would freeze zombies solid! Also, to all on the forum, DO NOT TRY TO ACT LIKE A ZOMBIE OR THE INFECTED!!! I have witnessed people who have tried... eventually I deduced that even if they acted or sounded like them, they were slaughtered... It is official. Infected and zombies have still got their sense of smell. Stay safe. Don't let them attract more attention. Logan out.

There were quite a few cars in the parking lot, but it was not jammed like I expected. It looked like a normal shopping day where the lot was about a quarter full.  We crept up on the parking lot and saw a few zombies shambling among the parked cars.  I could imagine this parking lot years from now with the same cars parked in the same spot and weeds peeking up through the cracks in the cement and eventually growing over the vehicles.  Eventually the cars would be completely engulfed in vegetation.  Mother nature taking back the earth.  Luckily we were still far enough away to where the zombies were not drawn to the sound of the car or the movement, but that would change quickly.

“Stop here for a second.”  I said.

“Why here dude?  You gonna make a run for it?”  Sean joked from the drivers seat as he brought the car to a stop.

“Yeah I am gonna engage my go-go gadget legs and just walk right over all of them.”

“I loved that cartoon.  That car would come in handy right about now too.”  Sean said.

“Why are we stopping here?”  Nadia asked from the back seat.

“Well, I want to get an idea of how many are out there and the best way to make it to the store without drawing their attention.  Plus we are getting a little too close for my comfort.  Once they see the car moving or hear it for that matter they will be all over us.  At least now we are not moving.”

“I say we keep going straight here and take it all the way to the end of the lot.  There should be more than one service entrance in the back and hopefully less activity from those things.”  Nadia said.

“Yeah that sounds like a plan.  Sean, make it so!”

“Fucking Star Trek geek!”

“You know it!”

We made it around to the back of the store without any of the zombies noticing us that we could tell.  A couple that were the closest looked over in our direction, but didn’t look like they were advancing on us before we turned the corner to the back of the store.  When we turned the corner we didn’t see a zombie anywhere which eased the tension that had built up in the car while driving in plain view of the zombies in the parking lot.  There were 2 loading docks that ramped to the store and 2 doors on each side of the loading docks.  All of the doors were closed which we took to be a good sign.  There were a couple cars parked close to the loading dock also.

“I don’t want to mess with the loading dock doors let’s see if we can get the service doors open.”

Sean pulled the car up to door that was just past the loading docks and was ready to cut the engine.

“Hold up man.  I will go see if the door is open and if not try to find a safe way in and scan the area.  You guys stay in the car with it running until I come back.”

Getting the store checked out was a little harder than I thought it was going to be.  The doors were all locked of course so I climbed a maintenance ladder up to the roof and found entry into the store that way.  The store was littered with dead people, but luckily for us they were all the face down on the floor kind.  None of them were zombies or rather if they were they were not any longer.  They now joined the ranks of the forever dead.  After letting Sean and Nadia in we grabbed shopping carts and made our way around the store grabbing food, batteries, flashlights, sleeping bags and whatever else we thought would be useful.

“Dude check this out.”  Sean said as I rounded a corner in the sporting good section.

“Not bad, but I think that thing is made to shoot squirrels or something.”  I told him as he held up a cross bow that looked like it was made for a 5th grader.

“Yeah, but it should get the job done at 80lbs though right?”

“Yeah I guess, but those things take forever to reload.  Better than nothing I guess.  We need as much fire power as we can get.  Find any real weapons back there?”

“No, it looks like all the good stuff was taken by someone.”

“No ammo?”

“Nope.”

“Damn.  Alright well lets go find my wife and get the hell out of here.  I am itching to try and find a boat and get on the water.”

We turned the corner and both came to a skidding halt as we ran right into the barrel of an assault rifle.

“What do you boys think you’re doing?”  A very gruff voice said.

“Woaa, Woaa man!  Relax.  We are just looking for some food.  We mean no harm.”  I said immediately throwing my hands in the air dropping everything I had in my hands to the floor.

“You mean no harm?”  The man said.  I could make him out a little better now that I was not staring right down the barrel of the rifle.  He was in his 50’s, had a huge grey beard with long grey hair.  He wore a red flannel shirt and brown pants with sturdy looking boots on his feet.  It looked like he had not showered in months and I finally noticed his smell.  Whew!  Definitely ripe.  He had the look of an ex con or mountain man maybe.

“You mean no harm?”  The man said questionably, again.

“Yeah man.  We are no threat.  We were just looking for supplies.  We are not here to hurt anyone.”  Sean said breaking his silence.

“Let me ask you a question boy.  Why do you think all the dead people in here are still dead?”  He said.

“I am guessing because you killed them all.”  I said matter-of-factly.

“You bet your ass I killed them all.  Which means I rule this store.  I am the president, CEO, CFO, MMO whatever, you name it.  This place now belongs to me and I consider you boys to be thieves.”  He boomed not looking very happy.

“Hey look Mister.”  I stammered.  “We really didn’t know this was your place.  We will just leave everything and you….”

Before I could finish my sentence Nadia came running around the corner.

“What is going on?”  She said as she was rounding the corner. “I heard a shout.”

She noticed the man pointing the gun at us and froze.

“It is ok baby.  I just told this nice man that we will be leaving.  This is his place now.”  I said as I looked over the man’s shoulder over at my wife.  The man didn’t take his eyes off us.

“Come around to the front with these boys little lady.  Let me get a look at you.”  He said as he started flanking us to get her in his vision.

“It is ok sir.”  I tried again.  “We will just be on our way.”  I started walking past him towards Nadia when I felt the butt of the rifle in my back sending me sprawling to the floor.  White stars burst at the corners of my vision as my head bounced off the beige tiled floor.  I vaguely heard Sean saying something and Nadia screaming while I tried to get up off the floor.

“Help him up!”  The old man said.

He had wrangled us all together and was now standing were I was a minute earlier and we were standing where he was.  Completing our pirouette.  All three of us were huddled together.  Nadia and Sean both helping me to my feet.  My vision was still pretty hazy.

I heard the man whistle.  “Well, you are a fine piece aren’t you sweetie.  I’ll tell you what.  You come on over here and take care of me and I will let your little boy friend’s live.”

“They are not my boy friend’s!”  Nadia shouted.  “He is my husband!”

“I don’t give a rats-ass if they are both your husband!”  He bellowed.  “You come on over and here and do what I say and I may let you leave with them when I am done.”

I was just starting to come out of my haze and realized what was going on.  The old man started walking towards us with his rifle pointed just slightly off to the left.  He commanded Sean to take a step back and he did as he approached.  He was within a few feet now and he was reaching a hand out to grab Nadia from me.  She had her arms wrapped tightly around my waist at this point.  I feigned like I was sliding down to the ground, going to pass out again.  Nadia tried to hold me up and the old man reached his left hand out to grab her with his right hand still holding the gun.  Leaving him vulnerable in my direction.

I came up hard and fast under the barrel of the gun with my left hand and had a firm grip on it aiming it at the ceiling simultaneously pushing the old man back with my right hand.  I heard Nadia scream and at the same time heard Sean “Kick his ass Seabass!”.

Sean was already making his way over to us as he made his smartass comment.  He may have been a smartass, but he was not stupid.  He was seizing the opportunity to help me over-take this old bastard.

“You stupid old bastard!”  I heard Sean say as he came up behind me getting into position to help me out.  I still had my hand on the barrel and had it aimed at the ceiling and was still pushing the old man back hoping to knock him into a shelving unit.

“I am going to kill you all!”  The old man bellowed.  “I am going to rape that little wife of yours over your dead bodies and cum on your faces!”  The old man was in a rage and was trying to force the barrel of the gun down, but I had age on my side.  He was strong, but I was pumped with adrenaline.  Finally I twisted the barrel of the gun and heard a crack and then the old man scream.  He went down and I went down right on top of him.  He dropped the gun in the fall and it clattered away and hit a shelf.  Sean went for the gun.  The old man bounced his head off the tile my head was just introduced to moments earlier and apparently he hit at a weird angle because I heard a snap and the old man went limp under me.  I didn’t notice right away and starting throwing hay makers at the old man’s face and must have gotten 10 off or so before Sean was pulling me off him.

“He’s dead man, relax!”  Sean shouted as he pulled me away from the corpse.  I was still flailing away with my arms trying to mangle the old man’s face.  I was slobbering all over myself in a rage.

“Let me at that mother fucker!  Gonna rape my wife?  Fuck you old man!  I’m gonna fuck you up!”

“John he’s dead.  He’s dead!” I heard Sean saying over and over.  I stopped punching and looked down.  His head was bent almost all the way to one side.  I must have been throwing more rights than lefts because his body was kind of on its side and his head almost on backwards.

“Damn!”  I said.

Nadia came running up and wrapped her arms around me repeating the same phrase over and over in a whisper.  “You promised.  You promised.”

“Yes I did baby.  It is alright now.  That man is dead.”

I looked over at Sean who was examining the old man’s body.

“Kick his ass Seabass?  Dude we were about to get killed and you are still wise cracking.”

Sean still looking down at the man said “You know it!  And you did better than kicking his ass you killed that son of a bitch!”  Sean let out a sharp little cry and stumbled back from the old man.  The old man’s eyes opened and his jaws were snapping up and down.  Sean brought up the gun he took from the old man meaning to shoot it and I stopped him before he could.

“Dude, no noise.  We do not want every zombie in the lot surrounding us.”

We were all in a mild shock.  None of us had seen someone die and come back without getting bit.  None of us really knew anything about the virus, bacteria or whatever it was.  We just assumed you turned when you got bit.  This old man just gave us some very valuable information with his death.

“Do you see that shit?  Dude is dead, but….” he trailed off and then continued, “I thought getting bit was how you turned.”

“Well obviously you turn no matter what unless the brain is destroyed.”

“Which was what I was about to do before you stopped me.”  Sean said looking over.

Already walking away with my arm around Nadia trying to console her I looked over my shoulder and said, “Break out that cross bow and give it a whirl.  At least you can practice if it works on a zombie that cannot move.”

“Good idea.”  I heard him say as Nadia and I turned down an isle to sit down and catch our breath.  I heard him tearing open the package as we sat down.  I heard the soft thud of the arrow piercing the skull and stopped hearing the teeth gnashing and the gargled moans, moments later.
