Finished it today. Spoilers ahead.  I'll be honest, these thoughts of mine aren't nice.  I could ramble on and on and on about several dozen things in the book that made me want to stop and throw it away; but only because of knowing what a damn good writer Z was, and what a good guy he was too (even when some of you pansy ass bitches kept complaining about me) I had to finish to see if there was something of him left in it.  Read it if you want....it's not pretty and is harsh and unpleasant.  Nothing personal.

Lot of things in it made me think about what Z and I had talked about back in the day....keeping in mind that Z ain't I weren't friends or buddies like he was with some of you guys, we didn't take long soapy showers together, or hang and talk about RCS and Sage's mom, or why Ponigal drove a miata......but, I honestly can't believe he wrote this book. If he did, he either had his head up his ass, or didn't have his heart into it.  I might be wrong, but that's my impression.   It didn't sound like him, and after enough late night discussions you kinda get to know the feel of someone and their style.   The character directions were....sloppy.  Loose threads that popped up only to be left unanswered and a ending that was frankly, crap.  The only thing Brewster didn't do at the end was fight back a tear and snap to attention and salute the sky like from some kinda cheap Tom Cruise move scene.

I understand that people die quickly, and not very nicely....seen it, done it.  Z and I are ex-army guys and we talked shop about life in the field; but, he always talked about the underdog overcoming the odds, like when he was in basic training and other things that occurred in our lives during that time; that there is hope and that you have to fight for it.  The deaths in this book were....blatant, b-grade movie throw aways that seemed more for shock and garishness.  Didn't really serve any decent plot point.  Hello influence from crap like Hostel, Saw, Wrong Turn, etc.  Z like b-grade movies, but at least they had style.

And Sawyer, for fuck's sake, he was a bad ass villain that got turned into a Nickelodeon bitch that could have been on Drake and Josh.

And the Lutz/Sawyer connection?  Ever heard of for-shadowing?  Someone didn't because that link was dropped like a steaming dog turd...out of the fucking blue I'm now to see that the scourge of Abrahamsville is in cahoots with the rebel govt?  Bad plot device, and then this uber-nut job Lutz is a pussy for the rest of the book?

And the death of the town?  Really, that was a rehearsal for Ohio?  How so?  Two totally different battle zones....one's a town, one's a complex....bit of difference.  Even the RSA brigade is the experienced and battle tested one, why waste them on this rinky dink op?  They sound like mercenaries and not ex-military units and I can tell you, mercenaries are generally better than what I saw in the book.

And then the Sheriff is the ONLY one to get away? Then we have his untold story of his travels to FINALLY arrive at the right time to save our hero's (....who've fought across the half the world from the outbreak of the plague to the final stand in Ohio, but die like one dimensional cardboard RPG characters on every 3rd page?...) and then...well...that's it?  Rushed....feels rushed and empty and left me feeling like I've was looking for a good whore only to end up with a donkey in a mexican border ton.  Cheated and dirty.

And don't get me started on how Z did a great job of the NSA monitoring the emails between Sherman (who's ending is total bullshit, lame and theatrical) and Demillio....no explanation on why the NSA started doing that....what, just because they were bored?  Why was Sawyer focused on them....who assigned that mission and why?  That left me wondering what the story behind that was.  It was a mystery and lost opportunity.

And Z told me he had planned to talk about the origins of the plague and that it would be explained in the final book, hell, he sent me notes about it that looked awesome....didn't see it.  God this book sucked ass.  We're his notes really followed?

As for the notes, I don't care at this point.  I can only hope for Thom this was Z at his worst, cause otherwise, you suck as a writer dude.  Nothing personal, just my thoughts.

This book had so much potential, but felt rushed...maybe for the money, maybe to use Z's name....but from what I knew of Z, and again, I wasn't his bestest of friends....this book wasn't him.  Not the Z I talked with until the final day.

Well, that's that.     Not really, I could throw in the hard to buy love stories that felt forced and sudden.  The "Chief" and his amazing mercenaries that served what purpose other than to kill 2 charming characters...life is rough I guess.  The throwing away of Z's characters to be taken over by new characters who don't really mean much.  Demillio's/Sherman's/Thomas's and so on who's basic way of talking and style changed.  Argh....I'm going for a drink to wash this bad taste out of my mouth.

No wonder we don't have an active forum or new blood taking part....if I'd stumbled across that third book, I'm go look up russian porn, and two cup videos, or even RCS's youtube page....and he sucks as a gamer.....

It's like I said from the jump, yeah? For what you liked, all credit to the Recht. For everything else, blame the ghost writer. I'm a big boy.

I do have one other thing to say, now that I've had a chance to eat dinner. If you think I'm a bad writer for this, that's fine. That's your opinion, and bless you for having one of your own. Praise be to the Union!

Call me a liar about what I've said I did, or about what I said I followed? That's a different conversation.

These are the novels that got me started reading zombie books in general and Permuted books in particular. I only took on the job because I loved the Morningstar Strain. Did I write things into the novels? I had to. Anyone taking this job on would have had to. I rewrote discarded scenes to keep them in the novel to maximize the Z content. I bridged gaps in the narrative. And I did it according to what I got from the Rechts, and according to the outline I'd provided to them with what I said I would do. If there's other material Z had plans to unveil, it wasn't in the files I got.

In closing, I guess: it's fair if you didn't like what I wrote or how I wrote it, whatever it was you think I might have written. If you're calling me a liar, well. Fuck that. That's why I've been open about the process the whole time, right? Coming here to post things being worked on and to ask questions. Fuuuck that. I keep my promises and my word. Hey, if there was stuff you had, a couple of years ago when I first showed up asking questions was the time to bring that material up, not a year after release.

I'm off to eat dessert.

Interesting stuff, this thread is.    As for calling ya a liar, I wouldn't.  I would however say that maybe what Permuted gave you may not have been valid; or everything they might have had, or thought they had...just my opinion not based on anything solid.  I have always said, and you can go back and check my prior posts, that the head person at PP eats kittens and is evil, based off gossip I've heard around the devil drinking fountain.

Well, as for what Z gave me, I assumed you had it.   If PP did HAVE all the notes, that stuff should have been there, and PP wasn't like a fountain of information about what they'd do or where going to do, but isn't that typical corporation any-country?  No transparency, for whatever reason.    PP really didn't come and ask us about much of anything...though I do give them evil kitten sons-of-bitches credit for stepping up and making an effort to keep Z's project going AND keeping this website going (though I think it's dying personally). SO...PP isn't totally evil....so far.  I don't fault PP for it, they actually did better than I ever expected and I do appreciate that and do pimp them with my velvet gloved fist.

The book was...fair....but...there were inconsistencies and since no one was pointing out shit for the most part on the forum, I figured I would....ass munches that they were for not being more direct, IMO.  Nothing personal guys.

As for the folks may have given ya...mmmmmhhh....sometimes families aren't as tight as we'd like to wish them to be.

Now, if I had to give this a review NOT based off the series....it'd be fair. I would still say the ending seemed rushed. Lots of loose threads....unless it's perhaps an intro to a new series or line of books; like the Chief part...now that could be a point of something interesting and take on a life of it's own.

That being said, it's still better than anything "I've" done or probably ever will.  As a backseat writer, I can judge, bitch, complain, and call you a son-of-a-bitch for it....but your still a step ahead of my skills.  So, I'll still blame you for all the bad in the book, and give Z for all the good....and if I find out otherwise, I'll punch that SOB in the face when I meet him in the afterlife.
