SUNDAY:

Back on it one day, and I just killed a pair of characters. Mmm. Blood on my keyboard. It's yummy.

Excerpt!

They lie on their bellies, taking turns looking through the binoculars and feeling the wind go out of their sails.

"Have I already mentioned that I do not like this?" asked Rico.

"Man, shut the fuck up," Wendell said. "We're about to get us some wheels and get off our goddamn feet, alright?"

"Whatever you say, Pollyanna. What I want to know is, how are we going to get in there and back out in one piece?"

Wendell sighed, dropping his chin to his chest. Rico had a good question; directly across US-283 from the museum stood a giant Wal-Mart whose parking lot looked like a war zone. Cars were crashed into each other, burned out and overturned metal husks littering the black pavement, and the sun was on its way down. In the utter still of post-Morningstar Nebraska, the group could hear the stirrings of infected in the wreckage of the parking lot.

"I don't care how good the prices are," Allen said from the back, "I don't want to go to Wal-Mart today."

"Bet your ass," Stiles said.

MONDAY:

Almost done with Chapter Four, just putting the last page or two on it. And I've found that I have to re-order the next two chapters, because I've been trying to alternate from group to group, and so Chapters Five and Six have to swap places. No big deal, though. Just something for me to be aware of.

Thanks for the compliment! I'd let you know if the book gets picked up, but that would blow my super-secret identity, and we can't have that.

Percentage-wise, I'm about 25% done with Survivors. The past month and a half has been slow, really, so I look to be done before Christmas. (We'll see if I have to eat those words.)

So far, it's been something of an uphill battle. Whenever I sit and think about what I'm doing, the magnitude of it, I lock up a little bit. So, I try not to sit and think that I'm working on finishing Z's legacy; instead, I just sit and write, and that takes some of the pucker-factor out of it. Still, it's monumental.

Anyway. Big week ahead. Going to finish out Ch4, and probably Ch5, too. Make a big fucking dent in Ch6. Big week.

As you was.

Hi,

I've admittedly not checked in for a while to see the progress of Survivors but it's awesome news to hear it WILL get completed.

Thanks for the updates, I enjoyed reading all the posts and I look forward to keeping up with the progress.

Hope you enjoy writing it as much as we're gonna enjoy reading it.

Have fun.

I would guess 'done by christmas' means MAYBE finished writing by Christmas.  Add another 6 months for editing/production etc and I see a release date somewhere around Christmas of NEXT year.

For the information of All hands, the USS Ramage safely pulled into its Homeport at Naval Station Norfolk today and from what I can see there is no Zombie Battle Damage.

THURSDAY:

I believe that I have figured out why Mitsui speaks Japanese (besides that Z forgot). So suck it, naysayers.

Once I'm done with Chapter Five and Eight, it's all downhill from there, as those were the last of the small chapters. Five has ballooned nicely, and we're in for some fireworks.

I've been reading the feedback thread, looking for things that Z has said he'd like to address, as well as trawling the Amazon reviews for Z's replies. I hope that these issues are addressed well enough and that I'm as accepting of criticism, when the time comes.

No lies here: this version of Survivors is probably not entirely what Z had envisioned as the capstone for his trilogy. In an effort to maximize the Z content by including deleted scenes, the story has shifted some and I've re-ordered events to make the extra scenes and chapters make sense.

I have a literary shoehorn and could have easily just crammed all that stuff in there, but the end result would be poor if it wasn't done with thought and care. Still, I can't help but think that the end result will be faithful to his vision...especially the end.

Yes, the end. In a way this is bittersweet for me, as I imagine that it is for a bunch of you. I'm happy that the trilogy is being finished and that so much of Z will be in there (and honored beyond words that I'm doing the work) but on the other hand, it marks an end to the journey. Finality...but don't worry. It says it all at the header of the page.

Infection.
Destruction.
Hope.

FRIDAY:

Wordcount updated. Lots more green this go-round. Hoo-ah. Chapter Eight is the last of the small chapters, and then it's on to re-editing the existing later chapters and writing the last few.

See you Sunday, with samples!

SATURDAY:

All the links Jacob puts on his FB page for people asking about MSS3 are making me jittery. It won't impede progress or anything, but it is another wake-up call.

I'm at a point where there's going to be a lot of human-on-human violence, and I know the idea was to have movement on both sides hampered by the undead, so I'm trying to find a balance. On the one hand, I would think that the Survivors would do better in that situation than the RSA goons, because they've been living it up on a nice, cozy compound, and the Survivors have been trekking it across this great nation, knee-deep in infected. On the other hand, I don't want things to be too easy on anyone. A victory without struggle is no victory at all.

Plus, I have some people to kill. Oh, yes. Now it's just a matter finding fitting ends for the Doomed Ones. Something suitable. The good thing is, I'm not in uncharted territory just yet. I have Z's notes to work off, and that is a huge weight off my shoulders.

I know it's a couple days late, but I hope all my fellow vets had a good one.

SUNDAY:

Snippet!

Sheriff Keaton stood by the window of the darkened station and watched the rain come down. He sipped from an old coffee mug that he absolutely refused to let anyone wash.

"If you're the type that washes your mug," he'd often say, "then you don't know how to drink coffee."

Wes came in from the wet and shook off his poncho. "Cats and dogs, Sheriff."

Keaton looked back at Wes, then into the sky. "This?"

"Well, not yet. But just you watch. It's coming." He hung his poncho over the bucket by the door and sniffed the air. "Jesus, man. How old is that coffee?"

Keaton took a gulp and smiled. "Old enough to stand on its own, I guess. Be learning to walk soon."

Both men laughed.

"That stuff's gonna kill you—"

Wes' words were cut off by the instantly-recognizable chatter of automatic weapons fire.

"The hell? Wes, grab a rifle."

The Sheriff doused the only light in the room, a candle, and strapped his gun belt on. Ever since Lutz escaped, he'd gone wearing two Berettas around his waist and kept a rack of shotguns and AK-47s at the back of the office. The better to hoist Herman upon his own petard.

At this point it's doubtful. At least, nothing is started and I don't think it's even been considered. Not that I would rule it out or anything.

BUT, I do believe Sam Raimi has a copy of MSS, so hopefully he'd be inspired to adapt the saga to the big screen. But Raimi got the copy a couple years ago, and there's been no word.

Time will tell! It's not often that books get a screen adaptation so soon after their release. It happens, but it's the minority of book-to-film adaptations. There are a metric shit-ton of books out there that could potentially be adapted, so it's a needle in the haystack.

Zombie hunter I wish like hell they would make this a movie but thinking about it the 3rd book not being done the scope of the project for a zombie movie the bugget would be huge africa middle east a navy destroyer and the amount of zombies "i would love to play one for free" i know alot of stuff is cgi now but still would be a big price tag if it could have come out a few months after the dawn of the dead remake they probably would have done really good at the box office on a plus side seems horror movies are making a strong comeback so always have my fingers crossed they make this it is as i have said before the best zombie story i have ever read or seen great char's and story line and yes that included taking the place of night of the living dead that i seen when i was about 8 and it scared the living crap outta me and was my favorite till I read Z's
A big promise to all that are here if i ever hit the huge lotto i will bank roll this movie lol and the main reason I want to see the story as well as have read/heard it

I love the quote about the coffee mug.  I use the same mug for coffee at work every morning and never wash it either.  In fact if there is a little coffee left in the bottum I just pour the new coffee right in there and mix it all up.  I thought I was weird for doing....I guess I could still be weird for doing it, but at least I am not alone now!

MONDAY:

This weekend was for catching up on other projects...like watching movies. I finally watched the other three Romero movies, and I think I like Land the best of them. Just something about Diary, mostly that I didn't like the main protagonist. And the plot? (Yes, it is a question.) Hah, I thought the professor was going to be useless and he turned out to be a badass. And Survival...well, I think it's just best to pretend that one didn't happen. The twin switcheroo was cheap, and I didn't like any of these protagonists, either.

JBK, all the chiefs I ever served with would get mad, Mad, MAD if anyone washed their mugs. It was so universal among the hardcore coffee-drinkers that I figured it was either a Naval tradition, or coffee tradition. Either way, it was going in there somewhere. Glad to see that it found at least one person.
