FRIDAY:

Not a great week for scribing, but an excellent week for research. I think the RSA is now outfitted realistically, as are our merry bands of Survivors.

I have to rein myself in sometimes. You know how tempting it is to set a pitched battle in a university setting, where there may or may not be a Weapons Through Time exhibit? I'll save that for something else, but it sounds like a lot of fun. Still. I envision things like Sergeant Major Thomas duking it out with an RSA insurgent using a piece of rebar, weighted on both ends as a lethal kind of pugil stick. But no, that's too much me and not enough Z, so that stays out. Hah!

Calculating distance between where Abraham might be and where Omaha, NE is has turned out tricky. From dead-center of Kansas to Omaha is a little over three hundred miles, but the first group comes out of the Rockies into Kansas and then heads northeast to Omaha. Grr. But still...I used to routinely drive 500 miles at a time (for work) and it didn't take that long. What on the roads of Kansas and Nebraska would hold up a group traveling for long? I'm all ears.

Ah, homework. I thought I was done with it. It's for a good cause, though.

abandoned cars, abandoned military vehicles, wrecks, collapsed bridges, and they only take the back roads, maybe only travelling by day. Car trouble or lack of gas could take up time, or maybe raider attacks, maybe finding a few survivors that need rescue.

I'm sorry to hear about Z. So far out of the numerous books I have read Z was by far one of my top 5 writers. He will be sorely missed. PotentialSpectre whoever you are it sounds like you are doing a great job and I look forward to reading your editings and eventual finished product and hopefully this new book you have in for submission. Good Luck.
PS> Don't listen to the idiots, you're doing a wondeful thing for Z, his family, and his fans.

i beleive the assumption was interstates werr to clogged or too infested for travel. so once you scale down to state and county highways you are mostly on 2 lane roads, where a 2 car collision, or serveral cars stalled out can slow you down serveral hours. bridges of course being the worst as 1 car ou of its lane can block both lanes. and then 3 weeks of people trying to flee and being blocked, would create a considerable jam. also, i cant recall time of year but summer is construction time, and i just drove through oregon state highways and serveral miles had 1 lane a flag girl and pilot truck, the other lane had construction equipment. unfortunately, my travels did not take me through kansas and nebraska, laswt time i was through there was 91, so i could take pictures of the bridge on the river platte, where i had set the climax for my novel(back when i thought i could write LOL) total disappointment, alec giuness would have cried

Hmmm 300 miles in the PAW? I would safely call it 75 miles per day with transportation..... You would have to deal with security, skirting population centers, scavaging food and fuel. Your actual travaling time would be diminished due to the time to set up and take down secure stopping points. Possible leapfrog travaling with a scout team going first with main group coming after on a pre-scouted safe passage. This would entail alot of stopping and starting. So to go that distance 4 days min maybe a week.

Don't forget about the effects of weather and lack of maintenance for the roads and bridges. It only takes one good storm sometimes to wipe out a bridge or block a road.

Non-zombie related injuries combined with exhaustion of the survivors, especially the civvies, could burn some time if you pause to treat injuries and take a short break to R&R. Taking back roads would also slow progress. Dirt roads wash out quickly with no maintenance. Restocking supplies is good as is the idea of a side trip to rescue some family or kittens from a tree. Grass fires could potentially be a problem (lightning is a bitch). They would have to go around the fire. A big storm (hello tornado alley!) could cause them to hole up at least a day. If they hit a cornfield then He-Who-Walks-Behind-the-Rows could make an appearance I live in Oklahoma so I am familiar with the landscape and weather.

Tornado sounds like it could make for a cool scene, if you utilize it

Iv been following your log, it seems like your doing an awsome job. keep up the good work.

Also I drive from Wyoming to Omaha every summer and a couple of times during the winter. one time i was snowed in at Omaha because of the snow and ice storms, they can get pretty ugly, so depending on the time of year it can be a bitch to even drive on the interstate. i also know that the Omaha area is one of the worst places to be in an all out emergency because of the road system and the traffic. it would definatly be clogged with traffic and most roads you cant just bypass because the boggy soy field and the foilage like over grown trees and bushes. so even if they make good time the area from Lincoln to Omaha would be a major dead zone, it would probably be quicker to walk haha. hope that helped. might want to research emergancy management for the eastern NE and omaha areas, it will give you a glimps into what might have happened in the first day or two of the outbreak.

SUNDAY:

Sample day. This is from Chapter 4, Fight or Flight. Bang!

Rico turned, trying to catch a glimpse of what had piqued Allen's curiosity, and stopped watching his footing. His boot caught a slick of oil that had run out from under a battered Ford pickup. He slipped, falling hard on his rear. His weapon discharged once, making the group jump. The surrounding vehicles bounced the sound back and forth and amplified it, and the trees along the riverbank caught it and sent it back. The gunshot seemed to echo forever.

"Oh, fuck me," whispered a wide-eyed Rico, looking up from the ground.

The response was immediate: from out of one of the trucks behind them came the sound of a dozen low-pitched moans.

I, like many others, stumbled onto this news after finishing Thunder and Ashes. I think it's great that the last book is going to get finished. I've suffered a friend passing recently, and I'm trying to get his mustang put together. It may not be exactly the way he would have done it, but I know he would rather look down and see it going down the track than watch it rot in the garage. I commend PotentialSpectre for taking the time and putting forth the effort to reward us all and honor Mr. Recht.

WEDNESDAY:

Greetings! Is anyone else stoked for the S&S version of Thunder and Ashes?

I have good news. Upon relocating one of Z's discarded scenes from later to earlier in the book, I found that I also had to relocate it on the map. So, instead of just outside Omaha, the scene takes place just outside Lexington, about two hundred miles away.

It was then that I also realized why Z had discarded the scene, in light of what has to happen later. What Z had written, I mean. So I wracked my brains and I wracked my brains and I...looked at the map. The scene takes place on a bridge (the scene sampled above, actually) and in looking for another bridge, I came across this one I chose for the new placement. Well, right across the bridge (on the other side of I-80, leading east to Omaha) is the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles.

Yes.

YES!

According to the website (and what I got over the phone with one of the directors) the vehicles were mostly there in 2007 and mostly operational. He said that neither he nor the board of directors would have a problem with the museum being featured in the book, as long as they weren't villains.

I love it when a little bit of homework becomes serendipitous like that. The HMMV was exactly what I needed to bridge Z's deleted scene with what he put in his mostly-final draft.

Work proceeds. Thanks for the kind words, everyone, and I hope to live up to expectations.

THURSDAY:

The
HMMV: like them on Facebook.

At this point, I've done more research for Survivors than I have for any of my own works, and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, all the research will definitely pay off (and has already) when the book is complete. On the other, I'm wondering if I'm doing enough for my own humble novel-in-progress.

Chapter Four is brimming along and should be nearing its own little apex soon, and then on to Chapter Five. One of the things about Z's work, the cinematic quality it carries demands a series of ever-growing waves of action and/or terror.

I believe that I will be watching some kung-fu movies tonight. Perhaps something in a Jet Li. Fist of Legend, maybe. That one has the kind of tidal properties I'm talking about.

FRIDAY:

It's been a good week for Survivors. For me, too. I'll be traveling again next week, so the Friday update will go up Thursday morning, probably, and then I'll be mostly incommunicado until Saturday.

I've been giving a lot of thought to storytelling, and I think it would be interesting to re-represent the Morningstar Saga in the vein of Chaucer's Canturbury Tales. Not like, in any part of Survivors, of course. Possibly after it's all done and my involvement with the project is over, I'll come back as myself and post some stuff like that.

Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement, and I hope everyone has a good weekend!

I am in the military and I rarely find any really do justice with the military in Z books,, but when I read Z work.. I was amazed(even though he was in the army XD). Really cant wait. If you ever need any ideas with the military side I glady help. There not that big of difference between the Marine corps than the Army except for maybe principles. OORAH!!

WEDNESDAY:

Hello, everyone. Sorry for the extended silence.

Been working on Chapter 4, as well as moving narratives from other chapters that Z had written to places earlier in the book than he'd intended. Don't panic, it's just stuff like initial character descriptions for people that have already been in the book for two chapters.

There has also been some re-writes of my own work that either wasn't up to snuff or because I had forgotten to include somebody in an entire chapter. That would be no good, right? "Where did these people come from?!?"

Any suggestions for a writing soundtrack? I've been blasting everything from the new Danzig to the new Mushroomhead and Iron Maiden, as well as some old (I guess I should say "vintage" instead) AC/DC and Motorhead, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.

Cheers!
