Wow, I have only posted on here sparingly, and always meant to get to know you guys especially Z. Now I'll never have the chance to express to him how much I enjoyed his books.
I give my condolences to his family and to those of you that knew him better than I.
Being such a sparse poster on here, I missed my chance to get to know Zach, So here is my sage advice to anyone and everyone, If you ever have the chance to meet someone as "kick-ass", "chill", "awesome", great person I imagine he was, GET TO KNOW  them. I am saddened that I missed my chance.
Thank you, "Jack" Jeremiah Heaton Avid fan of Z's books

I can't believe it - I really can't.  I haven't been around much the past couple of months and I thought about Zach this morning and wondered whether the book was finished so I could get it for Christmas (a selfish thought I know, but last time I was on here, I read that the book was in the editing stages and that Zach often went awol during that stage, so I haven't checked in for a couple of months cos I knew he would be busy and not around.) I logged in, eager to read all the funny conversations and banter that really cheers me up when I read it and to see what has happened.  I don't mind telling you I'm crying like a baby right now.  I'm just so shocked and saddened. I'm devestated and I was just someone who chatted online to him sometimes and shared a joke with, and a love of Zombies.  His family and close friends must be absolutely inconsolable.

R.I.P Zach I'll miss you

Nic I've missed having you around these forums and actually was thinking about you recently too. I know you are in shock, we all are. His family are really great people and have been doing everything they can to keep his legacy going, which is to help us in our grief, keep the forum running in his honor, and they are working to get the manuscript together for publication of book three, Survivors.

If I could reach across the sea to hold you and confort you honey, I would. I know Z was special and held a place in your heart. We all miss him so much.

The thought of never ever speaking to him again is horrendous as I'm sure you all will agree. I can't imagine what his family are going through.

Thank you Diva, your words really mean a lot. I've had a lot going on in my life lately, and haven't had time to come on as much as I would have liked to.  Z sent me a message on Myspace a few weeks back asking how I was and whether I would be back as he'd noticed I wasn't around and posting anymore.  It touched me that he'd reached out and connected with me. I wish I'd made the time to come on here more and just be visable. I looked up to him a great deal, he gave me pointers on my writing and made me laugh when I was feeling down. He held a special place in a lot of people's hearts, but he'll always be my friend.

Rest in Peace Z - We'll miss you xxx

Hi everyone,
My name is Laura and I went to high school with Zach.  I've always had a special love for him----he always acted tough but the right giggle or being around a cat would bring out his soft side.  I've driven all throughout West Virginia to visit him through the years but since I moved to Texas a few years ago, our exchanges have been through email.  I keep staring at his last email, dated 6 days ago.

I just found out this morning---my friend sent me a text because she thought I already knew.  I had to have someone pick me up from work.

I'll never forget the stupid poem I wrote him when I was 15.  Watching Star Wars together.  Teasing him about his chuckle.  Wonderful, long, perfect hugs.  I keep re-reading old emails.  We were great about always telling each other how much we loved each other---I literally haven't been able to do that with anyone else, be it a family member or friend.

I pray this is a nightmare, I pray it's not real.

Laura, could you forward his email address to a family member? Christopher asked me for Z's primary email, but the only email I had was the one for here, zrecht (at) themorningstarsaga (dot) com, or he'd message me on myspace or through the PM system here. They need his primary email to gain access to the admin features for this website. They need it to keep the forum up and running smoothly. Thank you so much for posting here!

BTW, can you email me too? I'd like to talk to you!

DAMN!  Ive been away from my computer for a while and I come back to this!  Im rarely speechless.  Im having a difficult time with this.  Z's books were my first entry into this wonderful genre.  You can see by my post that while young into this forum Z bagged me with a nickname.  "Boy who cried sequel"  I sent him both of my books and he graciously signed them for me.  Those books are now, unfortunatly even more precious to me.  In our emailings we realized that we both went to Army basic training at Ft. Jackson South Carolina.  Z was kind to me and had some fun razzing me about the Army.  Im going to miss him, even though we never met.  I hope I dont sound callus when I say/ask that even if "Survivors" has to be completed by someone else I hope it gets finnished and into circulation.  I know Im selfish, but I want as much as "Z" and his wonderful creative mind as I can get.  I hope it can happen.

God bless you Zach.  God bless your family.  I pray their healing begins as soon as possible.

Tom

LJ, it sounds as if you are Z's true long-time love.  We'll be thinking of you and how wonderful your truly unique relationship with Z must have been.

Thanks for your kind words, Rap.  I'm in some pretty serious denial right now.  I moved away from home a few years ago and I really wish these past few years I'd been there to see him in person.  I'm so grateful to have been his friend these past 10 years.  I wish we hadn't lost him so young.

Oh heck Im there.  I just need a little time to adjust.  While I didnt know Z, I felt some kinship with him as we were soldiers at Fort Jackson for a time.  That and I respected his ability to tell the stories I liked to read.

Thoughts?

Guys, if you ever complete a final design, I would like to get a copy. While I'm too old for tattoos, I would like to have iron-on transfers made for the back of my lab coat and a couple of T-shirts.  I would probably add the words "Morningstar Strain" along the bottom or top.

Please forgive me if I ramble a little, this is just something that I need to get off my chest.  If lurked on this site for over three years just reading everyone's posts and getting a little laugh when something clever was posted, but I felt that I had to express my sense of loss for Z.  From his posts and from reading his first book I know that the world not only lost a talented writer, but a truely fun-spirited individual who could find something humorous in everything.  He will be missed.

Respectively,

Will

I liked the design you guys posted a few days ago, I'm going to do a cleaned up, non-digital version of it. I'll probably make variations so no one gets the same one. Unless we want to all agree on the same one. Usually you don't want the same tattoo as another person...but in this case, it's more than understandable. I'll scan it and post it when it's completed. Sorry for keeping you guys hanging on it, I was trying to keep from talking about it too much so it didn't seem like I was trying to promote myself during trying times. It's been hard to get on and post lately too, as I'm sure it has been for a few of us others...but I won't be disappearing. Just need some more cry time.

EDIT: While I'd prefer doing everyone's tattoos, I know not everyone will be able to hop a flight to Texas at the drop of a hat...if you want to wait and talk with me and plan a time to come down, that's perfect. If you can't make it, but you want the tattoo and are going to have a local artist work on it, please contact me first and let me find a, in my eyes, qualified artist in your area. I don't want anyone having a chewed up, scarred memorial. But like I said, I'd be honored to do everyone's.

I miss you Zach and I'm kicking myself in the butt for not having kept in better touch with you. You were a kind, intelligent and witty friend. Every time I've passed your old Braddock street apartment, I've thought to myself what fun times we had there and wondered what you were up to in life. Time passed, I got busy, you got busy, we lost touch and now you've passed on to the next journey. I hope in some future time, we encounter one another again. In the meanwhile, I'll be missing your delightful perspective on this small planet of ours.

My heart goes out to the Recht family. I do not know what to say and words fail me. I'm so sorry for your loss. May it be of some comfort to you to know how well-loved and well-respected your son was.
