I wanted to see if the third book would stand on it's own so I didn't re-read the first two.

Survivors was a good read on it's own  I would probably would have wanted to get the first two just so I could continue the story in the form of a prequel.

Really? I would not have thought so. I mean, yes, the whole first part of the book was catching up with everyone and why/wherefore, but I didn't think it would stand on its own very well.

That was part of my problem with Thunder and Ashes, actually. Like The Empire Strikes Back, it's very much a middle story, and it felt to me that Survivors, like Jedi, needed something to come before it.

But I'm very happy for you to say so. I think it would be interesting to get the opinion of someone who hasn't read the first two books, period.

I read all 3 in a marathon book session. I honestly thought it was a seemelss transition.

-And I do agree with Alex, survivors can stand on its own. There was enough explanation to explain who everyone is, and how they got to where they are.
