FINALLY got my copy yesterday of PLAGUE OF THE DEAD, after ordering it from BARNES & NOBLE and waiting what seemed like an eternity.
Figured I'd do a little more research on the virus and back story, etc.
IS NO PLACE SAFE?
Just read the previews for the 2nd and 3rd book, only to find out that book 3, Survivors, takes place in my home town, Omaha, Nebraska.
This is gonna be really good!  I've always wanted to read a novel in the exact place certain scenes happen in.  It's going to be rather creepy walking down Dodge Street, or in The Olde Market and remembering "that one chapter" in Part 3 that took place in "that one loction"
I can't wait!!!!

And what does this have to do w/ serial child killers and spam, Zombie Diva?

and .... to make it all the more real (and ironic), one of my friend's mom work at a Viral Research Facility in Omaha ... is it the same one our survivors are headed too?  I wonder ...

Damn, sorry I missed this thread.

That's crazy. I randomly picked Omaha because it was almost in the dead-center of the country and made a good rendezvous spot. I always thought it should be the national capital.

Also, I didn't know there really were viral research facilities in Omaha. See? Sometimes I screw up in reverse, just like Hawk and Trapper.

You guys should give me a few hotspots in the western side of Omaha for the boys to hit in Survivors. All I know of Omaha is from Google Earth, and a couple of tourism websites. Knowing a place that is near and dear to the hearts of residents to include--a pub, a restaurant, a shop--would be cool as hell to add in. The facility they're in I actually picked out using Google Earth; I don't know what it is in real life, but since even in the story we're told it's a down-low facility that butts up against an industrial park--I found just such a set up on the far Western edge of the city, just south of what looks like a major 4-6 lane interstate. I remember one of the nearest streets was Park Meadow drive or something like that--looked like apartment buildings. That area ring a bell for any Omaha natives?

(For example, in Thunder and Ashes, either Julie or Anna comments on a Bennigan's in Point Pleasant...I've eaten there; it's fun to throw in specific places people can relate to.)

I purposefully skipped my part of the country--eastern panhandle, West Virginia--even though Mason, Anna, and Julie would have had to pass within miles of my childhood home on their way west. Likely they would have taken I-70 & I-68, two interstates I've spent probably a combined few weeks of my life driving up and down...in retrospect I should've mentioned Sideling Hill as it's always been one of my favorite engineering marvels in my neck of the woods...basically, it's a mountain---with a massive swath carved out of it, a narrow, steep canyon to make way for four lanes of traffic. You can see all the different layers of rock and sediment deposits while driving through it...it's like driving through a time machine. The shale about three-quarters up along the visitor's walkway is loaded with trilobyte fossils.

I should have replied. I don't know why I didn't. For as long as I live here, Zack's stories will always be my fondest memories of Omaha and I will find the locations that he wrote about.

Is this where Z pictured the facility for Survivors?
