Zachary Allan Recht, 26, died on Dec. 10, 2009, at his home.

He was born Feb. 4, 1983, to Keith A. and Mary Recht of Bunker Hill.

He was also under contract with Audible Books for his books available to download for listening read by a professional actor.

Zach attended Inwood Primary School and Bunker Hill Elementary. He was a graduate of the Powhatan School in Boyce, Va. He also attended Handley High School, of Winchester, Va. Colleges attended were West Virginia University and Northern Community College. He was a unique self-educated historian.

Zachary was employed in 2007 as a staff writer at The Journal newspaper. This year he was an invited guest author to the "Horror Realm" convention in Pittsburgh, where his fans were able to meet and greet him, as well as listen to readings from his books. He also has participated in the "Poetry and Prose" Writer's Day here in Berkeley County.

He completed boot camp in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, S.C., where he graduated as 1st squad leader and won the sharpshooter competition.

Services and interment will be private. A public memorial service will be held and announced at a later date. Please contact Brown Funeral Home at http://www.BrownFuneralHomesWV.com.

You can also see the picture that went along with it here:  http://www.winchesterstar.com/uploads/obituaries/8ffba886baff84bdd478fe6aa9e01a0e.pdf

I swear I almost clutched my laptop to my chest when I saw that this morning.

Sharp shooter is the badge you get when you score a sertain number out of 40 shots attempted.  I got expert because I shot 38 out of 40.  Sharp shooter is something below that number.  Still a good shot.

I guess there it is in black and white.  So sad to see someone so young and full of promise gone.  Never met Z or even really talked to him on the forums (I mostly lurked waiting for release dates of Survivors), but I think he definitely left behind some work he can be proud of.  I just really hope that the 3rd book is eventually still published so that we get to read the full vision of what he had in store for us.

I printed this obituary and will put it in my copy of Plague.

And folks, it might be best to stop thinking about how it happened.  I know it's hard.  But the fact that we don't know might be a hint that maybe it's best we never know.  Just saying.  I think Diva is acting in Zach's best interest.  Please consider it.

The first question everyone asks when a loved one dies is how.  There is no morbid curiosity, there is no malice there is however a big void in the grieving process if everyone keeps asking how without knowing.

I have not and will not ask how it happened to ANYONE who may know, but that does not mean I would not like to know how it happened.

I was in denial for a good amount of time until I saw the Obit online.  I am at acceptance and while it may be selfish of me I would like to know simply so I can move on.

AGAIN:  I am not asking anyone nor will I, but I understand the WHY of people wanting to know because it is the same feeling I am feeling.

I hear you John but let me remind everyone, wanting to know and having the right to know, especially to the point of asking people that were close to Zach, are two vastly different things. This was my point in the other thread. Please don't take offense to that. The ones who've asked mostly were people that didn't even know him all that well. Why would someone want to cause pain to the ones who were closest to him just to satisfy their own curiosity? I've known Zach over 5 years. Even I wouldn't presume to ask his family members that sort of question.

If the family really thought the public had the right to know, and wanted to share that then they'd post it. Beyond that it's not even fair to post publicly any speculation, rumor, or anything else that can hurt someone else just by READING in a thread here or anywhere else. Seriously, have respect for other's feelings and drop it. Keep that sort of discussion private if you must discuss it. I've tried to explain this how many times already? You'd think some people had enough compassion for others to not post this sort of thing. It's NOT about me trying to tell anybody what to do, it's about having respect for his family. C'mon now, think people!

Now, the reason I came to this thread in the first place...

Here's the link to the facebook memorial page that Alison Recht set up. It is public and anyone can add photos or comment on the page as long as you have a facebook account, so please join and contribute too if you can. I thought it was very nice for Ali to make the userpic the one Z and I took together at Horror Realm. That was very sweet!
