I was 22 when it happened. I remember hearing about it on my ship while we sat docked in Norfolk, Virginia when it first reached the media. I remember sitting back, joking with my buddies about how it was some sick joke, that the media figured they could pull a fast one on us, or even that it was a prank just for our ship. We were on the USS Kearsarge, an LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock), which is basically a mini aircraft carrier, which also holds Marines and launches them via amphibious assault. Then I heard the CO over the 1MC: "Marines, gear up. We are sending a force out to collect officers and strategically selected personnel and bring them back on board. You have until 0300 tomorrow morning before we head out. Marines, you know what it means if you aren't here.''. I scoffed, and then jumped to my feet, as did the rest of the Marines, and we all headed towards the armory.
As we got off the ship, we noticed thousands of people flooding the piers trying to get to their boats or cars and high tail it out of the area.. Last we heard it had reached us in Norfolk. We loaded up in our vehicles and headed out to get the lucky travelers chosen to ride with us. Suddenly, the chain of vehicles stopped, and we all hopped out of our vehicles. A Major announced who would go where and to pick up who. About 4 vehicles per route, 40 marines. We were told to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity, but weren't given much more detail; Shoot only if necessary. Apparently there were people who got some kind of flu, and they were turning on their families or neighbors, and EATING them. It all sounded unreal to me, and it sounded just as unreal to everyone else.
We got to our first destination, and we hopped out and got to the door in a defensive formation. We knocked."General Anders, are you in there?". He opened the door in uniform and greeted us. We saluted, which he sharply returned. Sir, due to the current situation, we must evacuate you and.. He cut Staff Sergeant Marley off. "I know why you're here, SSGT. Marley. I've already sent my family off, lets get on with it.". Yes sir, said SSGT. Marley. We got him into the vehicle, and proceeded down the road. "How many more are we picking up, Corporal?" The General asked me. "Three more, Sir. One for each humvee. One Brigadier General, and two Colonels.". He didn't say anything after that, so I went back to talking to Private First Class Robinson, my buddy since basic.
Everywhere we rode, we saw mayhem. Cars driving recklessly, people running, fires, and we heard gunshots.. But none of us saw a thing. We were picking up our last officer, A Colonel by the name of Webber. It was only 1933 hours, August 3rd, 2011. The roads were packed with abandoned vehicles and debris. We turned off onto a road and stopped at a house. We noticed that the front door was open when we got to the front. We knocked three times. "Colonel Webber, are you in there?". SSGT. Marley Stepped in, and we followed. "Colonel we're here to escort you to the USS Kearsarge, pack lightly and lets roll, Sir.". We heard something knock over in the kitchen and when we turned the corner, the Colonel was staring at us from the other side. SSGT. Marley stepped forward three paces and then took two back. ''Sir.. Wh.. What happened to you?". The Colonel crept forward, snarling violently and staring at me. I stepped back and raised my weapon. "Stand down, Corporal!" yelled the SSGT, turning to look at me. He turned around and the Colonel grabbed him and bit him on the cheek. We stared in horror as SSGT wrestled him off, ripping his cheek down to his neck doing so. I fired at the Colonel, and he fell backward. He did not stay down. He slowly stood up and headed right for me, still chewing on the flesh he ripped from SSGT's face. "What the fuck?!" I heard PFC Robinson say under his breath, and he shot the Colonel three times in the chest. As the Colonel started to get back up, I hit him in the head with the butt of my M16, and continued to beat his head in, brains spilling onto the linoleum floor as I did so. Everyone stared at me, eyes wide. "What the hell, that motherfucker!" I heard the SSGT moan on the floor, blood pouring from his face. That crazy fuck tried to make a meal of my face!". He stood up, spat on the corpse and looked at us. "Do not fucking tell ANYONE. We found him like this, understood?". We all nodded, and headed back to our respective humvees. When we loaded into ours, the Generals eyes got big. "What happened in there.. What happened to your face, SSGT? Where is the Colonel?". "Sir, the Colonel is dead, some crazy civilian got to him before we could, and he took a nice chunk from my face with his teeth.". The General sat back, mouth wide open. "I'll be damned. We need to get back, you need medical attention. We were about an hour away from the Kearsarge, and it was 2314 when we ran into a roadblock of cars... And Marines firing upon what looked like a riot of about 100 or more people. We got out of our vehicles and met up with a Captain who was unloading a pistol clip into the crowd. "Whats going on, Captain?" I said as I got to him, laying down fire. "Son, the shit has hit the fan. 13 of my Marines are dead, not including the 4 officers we went to pick up. We saw people, and got out to warn them, and they attacked us. This is not right.. They won't go down.. We've all dumped clip after clip into them.". I reloaded, and told him about the "civilian" we had to kill at the Colonels house.. We left out the fact that we had beat the hell out of the Colonel himself. "So you beat his head in and he stayed down? Men! Concentrate on had shots! Head shots only!". We all started to aim for the head, taking careful aim, getting our sight picture. One by one they fell.. And they did not get back up. One Marine got surrounded, and I did my best to shoot as many of the people off of him as I could, but it was too late. I almost couldn't watch as they pulled him apart, piece by piece and ate him. I'll never forget seeing my first devoured human being... A Sergeant by the name of Harris. I took my shots, and we eventually downed them.. At the expense of 3 more Marines. We loaded everyone back up, and the other group put the wounded in their vehicles because they now had more room to do so.
MORE TO COME! (But only if people liked it.) Any and all criticism is welcome!
