I'd been looking forward to the new Judge Dredd readaptation since I heard who was on board. So it opened friday and I went to see it with my buddies.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the production and aesthetic were great, the lighting was perfect, and it was a comfortable atmosphere. I actually saw it in 3D as well which is something I'm against for the majority, but not all, movies. It was well done in that regard too. Not campy or stupid like most 3D films (though fortunately this was native and not post-converted).

At heart, the premise is very similar to that of The Raid: Redemption (the Indonesian film) in that the protagonist has to battle his way through a large, criminally-controlled building, and the vast majority of the film takes place there. But Dredd was scripted ages before The Raid was, so it's no rip-off in any sense.

I think it will probably be BEST received by fans of the 2000AD comics, or people who are at least somewhat familiar with the franchise or the world that the Judges are set in, only in that you will appreciate the details more, and one can then see how truly faithful the adaptation is. All the little nuances are more meaningful. Karl Urban does an incredible job as Dredd. One of the most difficult aspects of the franchise adaptation is bringing to the screen a main character who never once reveals his face above the mouth, and whose personal character arc is not much of an arc at all. But they manage to execute gracefully with the arc of a secondary protagonist who plays her part very well. The subtlety of the writing is more profound the more you reflect on it.

But even without any prior knowledge of the franchise world, they do a great job of bringing everyone up to speed in a natural and organic way, so there shouldn't be any hiccups or wont for understanding. It was done deftly and in a smart fashion. Even as I write this, I'm realizing and appreciating more and more about it as I'm reflecting on how well they put it all together in that regard.

But yeah, I REALLY hope this film grosses enough to warrant a sequel. Fortunately it had a low enough budget so that it doesn't need huge profits to make up the deficit, and I think Mega-City One looks incredibly interesting and I think there's a lot more to be expounded upon in future volumes.

SO YOU FUCKERS NEED TO GO OUT AND SEE IT SO WE CAN SECURE THE FUTURE OF THIS FRANCHISE

For those who are unaware, the DREDD trailer:

I saw it yesterday and liked it im glad Karl Urban was in a decent non-guilty pleasure film for once too bad despite good reviews its box office is a bit low, especially since they were thinking of making a trilogy of films if this one did well

Yeah it's tanking super hard at the box office, despite critical acclamation as well. I would mention how funny that all is if it didn't directly affect the potential for sequels

I loved the original. I'm lined up to watch Looper with my bro and dad this next weekend. I'll try to squeeze it in there somehow.

Looks like Dredd made the top of the list for DVD and Blu-ray sales, guys (myself included)! Awesome. I don't know if the monetary profits are actually going to be enough to merit a sequel, but ideally the dissemination of the movie among fans and audiences will be enough to give it a kind of cult status. And ideally the execs will see this and make the connection: if more people have seen Dredd this time around, there will actually be an established audience/demographic that knows what Dredd is (which they didn't really have when it was released last year), so hopefully more people would come out to see a potential sequel.

Check it out!

For me, nothing beats a classic.... That said, I still need to see this.  My dad has it on Netflix (via snail mail), so I have no idea when we'll get it.
