Alright so I thought we could start a thread for the much anticipated release of Z's magnum opus.

I got mine a few days ago and am about 40 pages in.  Just some random thoughts so far (please no spoilers fast readers):

I found an old post from Z about the location of the facility Demillio is at, but I cannot nail it down.  Anyone know the spot he was talking about here:

Now there are two, though the second one is a tad upset about character deaths, claiming Z would do no such thing. A quick search of this here forum shows otherwise. Bah.

Anyway. Wedgie material? I thought I was wearing all the necessary bits already?

I think anyone who knew Z would reallly understand the nature of conflict/war. It was obvious in the 2nd book that he did; with the loss'es.  Those that don't really, really understand....fuck 'em....really.  They won't understand until they understand and that takes actually facing the elephant.

I've started re-listening to PP's audio version for book 1 & 2 so I can get into the mindset for book 3 (which I thankfully go the last store copy).

Reviews are like assholes...everyone has one, and they all stink.

Finished. Review will be vague.

I mostly enjoyed it. I imagine it's a difficult situation to come into (writing the anticipated conclusion to a series started by Z). I'm not going to say "Z would never do this" or "Not as good as Recht would have done it" or anything. It was good.

The only major(ish) knock I have it that the pacing in some points was off or choppy. Not all, or even most of the times, but it was enough for me to notice. That said, it's better than anything I could ever hope to do.

I think you did a good job wrapping up the series. It's saddening to think about, because I really wish Z could have been around to finish it himself (not a knock on you at all Spectre).

Good luck in your future endevours.

I just finished Survivors, all surmised it was a good read and a fitting close to the trilogy. The frequent and sometimes pointless death of many of the characters was a bit shocking but I suppose this can be expected with the genre we are dealing with. What surprised me is that out of all of the literally dozens of named characters in the trilogy it is a fitting tribute to Z how he managed form a uniqueness and stark identity for each one, enough so that as each character was killed it tore at me as the reader.

As far as the RSA organization in the book, it is hard to imagine such a callous and ignorant faction rising from the Post Apoc government. How they senselessly burned through lives and resources and destroyed the entire town of Abraham was heavy-handed in such extreme so much so as to add an air of incredulity to Sawyer’s villainy. Sawyer never quite worked for me as the main protagonist; in Survivors he seems to be such a one dimensional character that I had trouble relating to him as the main villain. I suppose that if Shamblers are bad, Sprinters are worse yet, then Sawyer represents the ultimate product of the Morningstar Strain being a sort of single minded zombie in his own right, hell-bent on accomplishing his mission no matter what the cost in lives might be.

That is the finest way I have seen that put, that last part. I salute you!

Thank you for giving the book a chance, and for posting your opinion.

Not a problem and thank you for bringing the final chapter in this trilogy to fruition.
